g2 carseat Baby Gizmo Video Spotlight Review: Orbit Baby Toddler Car Seat G2Eco-Safe

We expect eco-safe materials from Orbit Baby (it’s their thing!), so we are happy to see that this convertible car seat uses non-toxic materials certified free of BFR (Brominated Flame Retardants).

How many lbs does it hold?

The Orbit Baby Toddler Car Seat G2 works with children 15 lbs – 65 lbs. It has a 15-35 lb rear-facing weight capacity and a 25-65 lb (up to 53″) forward-facing weight capacity. While it technically can be forward-facing starting at 25 lbs, we suggest that you keep your baby rear-facing until they hit that 35 lbs mark.

The car seat can be installed rear-facing with or without the car seat base (sold separately). When using the seat forward-facing, it is easy to install and uses the included Side Impact Braces™. These Side Impact Braces are used whenever it is installed without the base. The car seat can be installed with LATCH or the vehicle seat belt.

Orbit Baby is so on top of technology that if you don’t want to grab the car seat manual, for car seat installations on the fly, it is the first car seat with a QR-Code that automatically accesses the most updated instruction manual on compatible smart phones. We told you they were cool!

Parent-Friendly, Back-Friendly

Our favorite feature of Orbit Baby Toddler Car Seat is hands-down the back-saving rotation feature. When used with the Car Seat Base (sold separately), you can rotate the seat to the side so that you can put your baby in, take your baby out and adjust the harnesses with ease. No more having to lean over and practically crawl inside the vehicle to get your baby in the car seat!  When you have your baby situated in the seat properly, simply rotate the seat to the rear-facing position until you hear the locking click and you are ready to go. Best. Feature. Ever.

The car seat also features extensive side impact protection, each to clean and durable fabrics, and an adjustable headrest with comfy side-wings. I’m not crazy about the fact that you have to remove part of the fabric and re-thread Velcro pieces to move the headrest up and down but since kids don’t grow all that fast, you won’t have to do this daily or even weekly.

Since searching for belts under a baby’s bum gets annoying, we love that the Orbit Baby Toddler Car Seat has a BeltKeeper feature that holds the harness and crotch belt out of the way with magnets.

A Convertible Seat that Strolls? Fabulous.

Another innovative feature of the car seat is that it is the only convertible car seat on the market that works with a stroller frame to become a travel system. That’s right, this baby docks right onto the Orbit Baby G2 Stroller frame! While this wouldn’t be great as your full-time stroller because the car seat doesn’t recline, it does work great for traveling or in a pinch if your child is sleeping in the car and you don’t want to wake them.

If you are worried about the sun when you use the car seat on the G2 stroller frame, don’t be.  The Orbit Baby Toddler Car Seat is the first convertible car seat to come with a sun shade that perfectly tucks away into a back compartment when not in use.

Is it right for you?

The car seat without the base retails for $380 and the car seat base will set you back an additional $220. If you love having the most innovative products and don’t mind spending extra to get them, the Orbit Baby Toddler Car Seat G2 might be for you. While it isn’t designed for newborns (remember it starts at 15 lbs), it is a great next step from the infant car seat. We love the rotation feature for rear-facing, the travel system capability with the G2 stroller frame and the eco-safe materials.

Love the rotation feature! I wish rear facing limit was a little higher – at least 40lbs would be great. Thanks for the great review Hollie!

I too wish that Orbit had been able to increase their rear facing limit to 40lbs (Doesn’t affect me personally since I have tiny kiddos!) I also love that it can’t be used forward facing until 25lbs which definitely helps encourage rear facing longer. The ability to be able to turn the seat would be amazing for me!
