Green Baby Products! (In honor of Earth Day)

Date April 23, 2008

In honor of Earth Day this week, we wanted to share some of our favorite Earth Friendly Baby Products with you.  There are many, many more that we don’t list but here are some of our favorites.

Fleurville Re-Run Messenger Diaper Bag:  Not only does the Re-Run Messenger bag look great but it’s functional and because this diaper bag is made it out of recycled plastic bottle fabric, it keeps ten (10) 600ml plastic water bottles out of landfill.  How great is that?  It comes in 6 colors and our favorite is the Re-Run Chocolate Bottle Flower

Baby Planet Strollers: What makes Baby Planet eco-friendly is their fabulous recycling program. In an effort to help the environment, the company will help recycle your Baby Planet stroller when your child has outgrown it. It works in two different ways. 1) When you are done with your stroller and there is still some life left in it, Baby Planet will pay for you to ship it back to them, they will clean and fix it up, make it look almost new and donate it to a charity so that a family in need receives it. 2) When you are done with your stroller and you have basically used it up completely and it’s no longer road worthy or functional, Baby Planet will pay for you to ship it back to them and they will send the metal, fabric and plastic parts to a recycling center to keep it out of a landfill. In fact, they care about the environment so much that they will happily accept any brand of stroller for recycling. Way to go Baby Planet!!

Natural Mat:  Organic crib mattresses that are made with no chemicals, no plastics and no PVC.  Natural Mat combines the finest natural and organic raw materials including lambs wool, natural latex foam, mohair and cotton.

ImagiPlay Toys:

All of the ImagiPlay’s wooden toys are natural, made of rubberwood, bamboo or managed forest basswood preservative free and lead free.

California Baby:

California Baby is an all-natural line of baby shampoo, lotion and body wash.  Besides being all-natural, the company uses a green-packaging policy that includes: minimal packaging, recycled paper and soy inks for product info tags and literature, biodegradable packing peanuts and recycling of all production and packaging plastics.  The Earth would be proud!

GDiapers:

Thought there were only two diaper choices – Cloth or Disposable?  Meet GDiapers!  They are the third option:  flushable.  “gDiapers have no elemental chlorine, no perfumes, no smell, no garbage and no guilt. In fact, flushables are so gentle on the Earth you can even garden compost the wet ones in one compost cycle, approximately 50 – 150 days.” Everything that goes into one of their flushables gets re-absorbed back into the eco-system in a neutral or beneficial way.

Traveling Lifesaver!

Date April 21, 2008

We recently took a trip to Colorado for my brother-in-law’s wedding.   Flying has become a luxury item for us - who can afford all those plane tickets for every trip you take??  We’ve traveled by car with the kids before, so we weren’t incredibly worried about the trip.  The closer we got to leaving the more I worried - this drive was 12-14 hours long afterall!!  So I paniced and bought a portable DVD player system.  Specifically the Insignia Dual Screen Portable DVD Player.  Now, I’m one of eight kids myself and have taken plenty of family vacations.  I should have been able to handle the drive without such gadgets… but honestly, with tricks like that who would want to???

Pros
Entertainment baby!!  Our system came with 2 screens so that we could have two rows of entertainment going on in the back of the car.  And an added bonus - headphones!!!  Yes, in today’s family drive you can entertain you children quietly!  Note of caution - headphones do have the one pitfall that when watching Disney princess movies (and what little girl doesn’t watch those??) your daughter may spontaneously burst into song in the back of the car… and without the music backup, she may not sound quite like Sleeping Beauty.  ;)

Our system also came with a remote control - meaning I could rewind, fastforward and pause all from my front seat.  No dangerous climbing over the seats at 80 mph for those pesky little tasks!

Cons
Since we didn’t purchase the typical individual portable DVD player (which only sports one screen and for about the same price) we have to make due with the fact that this system isn’t so portable at all.  It takes plug-in power only.  It does have a car adapter (extremely handy), but no place for batteries.  Which means that once you hit your destination and would like to continue keeping your kids quietly entertained (restaraunt, brother-in-laws wedding perhaps…) you cannot bring your newly found lifesaver with you unless you happen to find seats next to a plug.

One more pitfall - the cords.  This system has cords-a-plenty.  So many infact that little feet are almost sure to pull some of them out (it is of course the only part of your carseat-restrained child’s body that is mobil, can you blame them for kicking about??) forcing you to make that daredevil climb to the back of the care anyway.  We tried several different configurations, none make this situation any better.  Until they make a cordless model, this will just be part of the bargain.

Finally, I was disappointed when I opened the box and found out that the actual DVD player part was attatched to the main screen.  So to change a movie mid-drive you’ll have to, again, climb into the back of the car.  We found that by putting the main screen behind the driver seat the front passenger could precariously tilt their seat backwards and (if memorized the locations of everything) change the DVD without physically climbing in the back.

Overall
I’d have to say that despite the cons, we loved this gizmo beyond belief!!  Our kids could watch their favorite shows for hours while we could have our adult conversations in the front uninterupted.  I’m not typically a Mom who goes for tons of gadgets, but this is one I think any family should have if they’re planning a long car trip.  These are not the days of our parents.  Our children are far more confined in the car than we ever were making the drive so much harder on them.  So if a movie will help get you to your destination without a total kid-crisis breakdown, go for it!!!

Introducing Pediped Flex!

Date April 18, 2008

Pediped FlexBeing huge fans of Pediped Originals, we are always so sad when our toddlers start to outgrow them around the age of 2. That is until now. Pediped has introduced their new line of larger, rubber-soled footwear, pediped Flex ™, for children ages 2 to 5+ years old. Hooray!!

Awarded the American Podiatric Medical Association’s ‘Seal of Acceptance’, these stylish shoes have soft, flexible soles and uppers (just like the Originals, we can bend them in half), and ultra-flexible flex-zones to support natural foot motion and provide maximum flexibility. They even have a built-in arch support to assist in the healthy development of growing feet. On each heel is a shock-absorbing air cushion to protect against impact and distribute pressure throughout the foot.

The shoes also have a unique fit system that allow you to customize the fit so it’s just right with each child and allows you to extend the time that your child can wear the shoes. Considering how fast our kid’s feet grow and how often we feel like we are buying shoes, we really appreciate that each pair comes with an additional 2mm insole that you can remove as your child’s feet grow to get more use out of them.

So, the pediped Flex are made well and are superb for our preschoolers and kindergartener’s feet, but do they live up to the stylish, couldn’t-be-cuter designs of the Originals and do our kids like them? In one word – ABSOLUTELY!!! Even though there are fewer designs to choose from than the Originals, the Flex ™ shoes are available in 9 different styles for girls and 6 styles for boys, and we still had a hard time picking our favorite. If we had to choose our favorite, it would be the Isabella Chocolate Brown for girls and a tie between the Jake Navy and the Conner Camouflage for boys.

Our preschoolers love them and at a time when our independent little tikes like to do everything themselves, we love that these shoes that close with a Velcro tab are easy to put on and take off. The new pediped Flex™ line includes 15 designs available in 7 sizes (US children’s sizes 6 to 12). We applaud Pediped for listening to our requests (along with moms across the country) in making their adorable shoes in larger sizes and appropriate for our babies that aren’t quite babies anymore. (sigh)

Kid’s Curly Hair Under Control!

Date April 17, 2008

I have two young kids (ages 1 & 3) with the curliest, blonde locks you have ever seen!  As cute as curls can be, they can also be unruly if left to their own agenda.  Since their hair first started to grow, we have seen tangles, frizz and poofy hair frequently.

Since I have naturally curly hair, I have been dealing with curls since I was little.  My hair was so curly when I was in 3rd grade that my mom decided to try the myth (at the time) that perming naturally curly hair actually relaxes it.  Yeah, that didn’t work!  It turned me into a brunette Annie (little orphan Annie) and I had to use a pick to comb my hair.  Then in 6th grade my mom just let my hair go and I would end up looking like a lion with big frizzy, poofy hair by the end of the school day.  Yeah, the boyfriends were lining up for me :)

By 8th grade, I found the wonders of gel, moose and hairspray and my curls came alive.  It made all the difference in the world.  As all women with curly hair know though, you never “comb out” the curls.  My best friend in high school never believed me the horror that happened when you did comb it out.  So, I let her try one day.  It wasn’t good!  Too much frizz for one girl to ever have!  Luckily, I was smart enough not to go out of the house like that.

Since then, unless I straighten my hair (which I do frequently), I never leave the house without product in my curly hair.  Lots and lots of product.  When I recently figured out that my two babies have inherited the curly locks from me (the blonde is from dad), I knew I had to take control of their curls from the beginning.  I knew that all the product I used wasn’t going to work on these baby curls.  So, what did I do?  I found my curly kid god-send in Johnsons No More Tangles Detangling Spray.  I know, I know…it’s been around for ages.  And if used correctly (you have to spray enough on), your kids will have the darn cutest curly locks you’ve ever seen.  Every morning, my kids know the ritual — “time to spray your hair…it’s food for the curlies” is what we say.

It works so great with them that I decided to try it on myself.  Yep…it’s even great for adults.  I still put in the gel but with the added Johnsons No Tangles, my curls are softer and look better.  So, if your kids have curly hair and you haven’t already tried Johnsons No Tangles…they you must try it.  Just make sure you are generous with the sprays when doing their hair and you’ll notice the difference.
