OVERVIEW Bouncers are a safe place to soothe, entertain and let baby nap until they can sit up unassisted. Bouncers -- also called "infant seats" and "bouncy seats" -- are slings of fabric of varying softness mounted in a metal frame that allow baby to sit at an incline. Most bouncers are appropriate from birth and include infant headrests, although some are meant for older babies with more neck control. Since the bouncers can only be used until a baby can sit up on their own (at about 6 months), we recommend getting a bouncer that can be used as soon as you bring baby home from the hospital.
Bouncers are thus named because the metal frame is a sideways "V" shape, allowing for a bouncing motion at baby's slightest movement. The bouncing is manual, however, and not an automatic motion like in a swing, although some come equipped with a vibration feature that soothes the baby similar to a ride in the car. Bouncers are close cousins to baby rockers; indeed some bouncers are convertible to rockers.
Bouncers are a fabulous place for baby when mom needs a little hands-free time to get things done around the house (although, of course, no baby should be left unattended at any time). Because they are so compact and lightweight, bouncers are easy to move from room to room. Some models even collapse or fold for easy portability. Many bouncers include music, lights, toy bars and nature sounds.
