Home > Baby Gear > Car Seats > Full-Size Car Seats   OVERVIEW Full-size car seats are meant to provide the best car seat protection for toddlers and bigger kids. They are forward-facing only, attach to your car using your vehicle's seat belt system or LATCH, and provide the all-important 5-point harness straps. And they have the highest height and weight limits so you can transport your child in the safest way possible as long as possible. Full-size car seats are the perfect choice for a child that has grown out of their convertible seat by weight, height or comfort but is too small for a belt-positioning booster. Historically, 5-point harnesses had low weight limits that forced kids into using a seat belt earlier than they should, but thankfully new advances in some of the top-rated full-size seats mean your child can be safely buckled into a 5-point harness for up to 80 pounds! Many experts believe the 5-point harness is the key to a safe ride for any minor passenger as it tightly restrains their entire body at both shoulders at any speed. Regular car seat belts are not thought to be as safe because they must catch in a crash -- and with lighter weight riders or slower speed impacts, they often do not -- and must be placed in exactly the right position, nice and flat. Hoping a wriggly 4-year-old keeps her seat belt in exactly the right position 100 percent of the time is not our idea of the safest ride. Another benefit to the full-size car seat is the LATCH system. While there are booster seats that also have a 5-point harness option, many of them do not come with LATCH and require the use of the car's seat belt for restraint. We're big fans of LATCH for its ease-of-use and the fact that it's much harder to accidentally come unclipped, whether by accident or older brother. Please note though, that most LATCH anchors have a 48 pound weight limit. Check with your auto manufacturer to be sure, but if your child is over 48 pounds, it is recommended you use the seat belt attachment rather than LATCH. The major drawback of a full-size car seat is its size. So they can fit larger kids, they can be quite large themselves. If a full-size car seat doesn't fit in your car, there are Booster car seats that have 5-point harnesses. Look for one with a high harness weight limit so you can secure your child safely the longest. The weight and height limits for full-size seats differ wildly, so check with the manufacturer directly or the owner's manual for the last word on their particular model. When shopping for a full-size car seat, the most important features are safety, installation ease and vehicular fit. There is no perfect seat for all children or all cars. Pick one that best suits your child and your vehicle. And because not every car seat fits perfectly in every vehicle, you should save all packaging and receipts until you are sure you have a good fit.
