OVERVIEW Finding the right potty chair for your child can be almost as stressful as
potty training itself. A seat that is too small, pinches small bums or
freaks your child out isn't going to help get mom to nirvana: a world
without diapers. While there are several different types of trainers on
the market, the best choice is the one that works best for you and your
child. Unfortunately, this may take many buys (borrow from friends if you
can!) before you find the perfect throne.
There are four main types of potties. The most common (and the one we like best) is the potty made from one piece of molded plastic. You do have to lift and dump to empty it, but because of this, they are usually small, portable and easy to clean. Some parents prefer potties with removable cups, but they can be more uncomfortable to sit on, have been known to pinch and cleaning dried pee from cracks is not our idea of fun.
Toilet trainers are cushy, child-size seats that sit on your adult toilet. Getting very small toddler up onto them can be a hassle, and dangling legs aren't always comfortable, but they have great success rates and make transitioning to full-fledged potty training scads easier. Finally, portable potties are meant for travel and usually consist of a blow-up seat with removable baggies for easy disposal.
