Full Review: All parents worry about their babies and want them to be safe. We’ve all had the experience of leaning over our sleeping baby to double check that they are breathing. If you’re a new parent, it can be hard for you to relax, especially when you start putting your baby to sleep in their room. The BebeSounds Angelcare monitor provides some peace of mind and helps you to relax. This alone is worth 4 stars. Keep in mind that this monitor is not based on any research that shows it will prevent SIDS or injury to your baby. Also, nothing will ever replace a parent’s instinct to check on their baby or adult supervision. However, I like to think of it as an additional tool to help new parents.

BebeSounds is a company that was started in 1997 when they introduced a prenatal heart listener. The company is a division of Unisar which was started in 1991 and manufactures and imports consumer electronics. The BebeSounds division is focused on products for children and has grown to now offer 15 products.

The BebeSounds Angelcare monitor will detect your baby’s slightest movements, even while he or she sleeps. The monitor comes with a nursery unit, two portable parent units, and a sensor pad. You are going to want to read the instructions carefully in order to make sure you’re installing it correctly, but it is very easy to do. The sensor pad is placed under the crib mattress where your baby sleeps. It needs to be placed on a hard flat surface but can be used on a crib, Pack N Play, or bassinet. If the crib has a spring or slat base, you can add a piece of plywood under the pad or you can order a masonite board directly from the company.

The nice feature about his monitor is that it gives parents three options in terms of how they monitor their child. Option one is to pick sound and movement. With this you will be able to hear your baby, see sound light, and hear a “Tic” sound with every movement. I have never used this because I find the “Tic” sound annoying. The second option is sound and movement but with the “Tic” sound off. In this mode you can hear your baby and see sound, and movement is still detected without the “Tic”. With both these options if the monitor does not pick up movement for 20 seconds a warning beep sounds and then an alarm will go off. The third option is to use the monitor in the sound only mode. In this mode it works like a regular sound monitor. The only thing missing with this monitor is a video mode but that can always be purchased separately.

This monitor comes in a regular model or a more expensive new deluxe model. On the regular model the parent units are a cute triangle shape, like an angel. The color of the monitor is blue and white and it has a carry handle on top. It has volume adjustment on one side and two channels to choose from on the other. You can set it to channel A or B and it must match the channel on the nursery unit. The range on the regular model is 200 feet and for the deluxe it’s 820 feet. The deluxe model comes with 10 channels, a temperature reading for your baby’s room, a further range, color LCD screen on the parent units, out of range indicator, optional voice activation, and a night light. These features are not available on the regular model. The parent unit on the deluxe model is higher tech looking with the LCD screen.

The parent units can be used with a battery to move through out your house or you can plug it into an outlet to save batteries. I noticed that the batteries get used up quickly when it is in battery mode. The sound quality is good overall. Sometimes it picks up a little static but then I adjust the location or direction of it and it goes away.

This monitor picks up baby’s sounds very well. I hear everything my baby is doing from making a noise to moving. I even hear the trees blowing outside or noise form outside my baby’s window. Now that’s sensitive! This monitor takes a little forethought and planning in its use. Every time you take the child out of the crib you have to turn it off. This can be hard to remember in the middle of the night. If you don’t shut it off the alarm will go off after 20 seconds. There is a warning beep that the alarm is about to sound. You do have a few seconds after the warning beep to shut it off. Even after using this for months I have been downstairs when the warning beep goes off and I have to go back to shut it off. With that said the monitor is doing what it is supposed to do. If you take your child out of the bed it does not detect movement so it goes off. At least you know it’s working when it does this. If you leave the parent unit on and only shut off the nursery unit, you can hear static on the parent unit. Sometimes I forget to do this and have to go back in the other room to shut it off. However, the newest deluxe model has improved on this by eliminating this problem. If you own this monitor you will occasionally encounter the dreaded false alarm. You may be woken up in the middle of the night by the alarm. You’ll then panic and run into your baby’s room thinking something horrible has happened to your child. There can be a few possible causes for false alarms. The most common cause is that your baby has moved too far from the sensor pad. Again, the monitor is doing what it is supposed to do but the first time it happens it can be scary. It might be nice if the sensor pad was larger so there would be less chance of your baby moving off it. The back of the nursery unit has a movement sensitivity control that you can adjust if you receive false alarms and you can trouble shoot the problem by reading the manual.

This monitor retails for about $81 for the regular model and $129 for the newest deluxe model. The regular model works great but with all the extra features on the deluxe model it’s probably worth the extra $40. It’s more expensive then some monitors out there but for the peace of mind it gives you, it’s well worth the extra money.
