| | | Full Review: Our never-ending search for the perfect highchair has led us to contemplate those weird Swedish z-shaped chairs more than once, but we're still not-so-modern moms who need middle-of-the-road features like seat recline and a washable cover. The Baby Trend High Chair is about as perfect as a normal highchair gets, but a few major design flaws keep it from our highest rating.
First, the good news. It's chock full of the safety features we require, like a 5-point harness and between-the-legs post to prevent baby from slipping out. It has an amazing recline ability, great for new feeders and wonderful height adjustment settings. The seat can be raised to fit your kitchen table, or even lowered down to coffee table height for those Chinese take-out and Blockbuster nights.
Our favorite thing about this high chair is that it not only comes with the standard vinyl seat cover, but also includes a reversible, soft cotton seat pad as well. The cotton cover doesn't wipe clean like the vinyl cover, so we don't recommend using it crazed, self-feeding toddlers, but it's a soft, cushiony dream for new babies. We always felt bad for our little ones when we first put them in the giant, roomy, slippy, vinyl highchairs just for a few spoonfuls of oatmeal. The Trend High Chair's cotton cover makes for a wonderful, comfortable introduction to feeding. And unlike the cover on your bouncy seat, this seat pad is easily popped off and washed. We found when we just rinsed it under the sink after lunch and let it air dry, it was ready by dinner.
Now, the bad news. For some reason we can only chalk up to poor design, the high chair's tray is just too high. Chin height for most babies, even big ones. We found all kinds of in-home, MacGyver solutions, like folded towels or phone books under the seat pad, but that doesn't change the fact that we shouldn't have to rig a solution. Here's hoping Baby Trend will fix this major flaw for the next model.
The entire high chair folds really easily and stores as compactly as any we've seen. The four, locking casters allow the chair to be scooted easily around any room, and overall, we found the highchair to be quite sturdy.
The vinyl seat wipes as clean as any other vinyl seat. By their very nature, vinyl seats have dozens of folds and cracks for food to hide in. We hate, you hate it, but we like the padding it provides our babies. Let the celebrities put their kids on a non-padded, new wave stick of wood for feeding. I'll take the Baby Trend any day.
