Worst: Honestly, It's Pretty Darn Perfect Full Review: see below   Lowest Price:  $12.63   (from 3 sellers) Full Review: The most innovative life-sized costumed character since Big Bird, Jim Henson's Muppet with the mostest Bear has everything parents and kids love: a great, gentle voice, an expressive face and a kickin' theme song. When Bear first debuted, I had the good fortune of working at the Disney Studios and got to meet the hairy one in person. Grown adults, myself included, were star struck, mesmerized by the masterful puppetry that allows a 6-foot bear to walk, talk, use his arms, raise his eyebrows and sniff you. (If you visit Walt Disney World, I highly recommend visiting Bear at the Playhouse Disney show at MGM Studios. Your preschooler will thank you for it!) Even on the small screen, Bear's charisma comes shining through. The 'Bear in the Big Blue House' television series is one of the most well-done, thoroughly educational and age-appropriate live action programs ever created. Too often, I'm not only not impressed but creeped out by the live children's shows (Doodlebops comes to mind...). Bear is imaginative without being condescending, cool without oozing forced, corporate hipness, and most importantly to me as a parent viewer, calm. That's not to say Bear doesn't get down. But 'Bear in the Big Blue House' episodes are mercifully free of flashing lights, blaring music and the hyperactive zaniness of most other programs. He is also, unlike our friend Barney, never annoying. Toddlers love repetition, and Bear delivers without the cop-out of Teletubbies' repeated segments. Bear has a signature opening, upon greeting viewers at the door he sniffs the camera and tells his visitors what he thinks they smell like ('pancakes' is our favorite guess), signature song-and-dance when he's happy (the Cha-Cha-Cha), and a signature closing song that is so touching it literally almost brings me to tears. Am I overly attached to Muppets? Perhaps. But for us moms that grew up before Nickelodeon, Sesame Street and the Muppet Show were all we had. As much as I loved those shows, Big Bird never seemed that cuddly to me and the giant monster Muppet Sweetums was, let's face it, the stuff of nightmares. Finally, with Bear, we have a big, furry guy to love. All of the Bear videos are great, but 'Bear in the Big Blue House Dance Party' gets our Best Pick because it's full of everything a toddler likes best: making music, singing and dancing. If your 2-year-old is like ours, this will be DVD they ask for more than any other. The lessons aren't high-brow or world-changing, but sometimes a bear just wants to have fun. At a full 50 minutes long featuring 3 Bear episodes, 2 on music and 1 on dance, 'Bear in the Big Blue House Dance Party' smells like a winner!
