While the company doesn’t have the sales power of Graco in the U.S. just yet, savvy American moms are embracing the brand. Considered the Mercedes-Benz of car seats, Britax seats are one of the most expensive seats on the market, but well worth it. You can’t put a price on safety, of course, and Britax more than delivers. They were the first company to include side impact protection on their seats, and now everyone is scrambling to follow suit with this important safety feature. They still lead the pack however, with their ingenious anti-rebound bar. The anti-rebound bar on the stay-in-car base for the Britax Companion keeps the infant seat from flipping up into the backseat in an accident, a wonderful feature we wish every infant car seat base had. The Britax Companion also has a tangle-free, 5-point harness system – the best we’ve ever tested. Nothing is more annoying or dangerous than twisted straps since they don’t distribute the energy from an impact evenly if twisted. The harness on the Britax Companion also features one-pull adjustment with no-tangle webbing that truly is one easy pull, one-hand multiple recline adjustment and built-in seat belt lock-off clips. The seat also feature Velcro tabs to keep the harness straps to the side when you’re loading and unloading your baby, but we found they become clogged with clothes lint fairly quickly and stop working that well. Aside from extra safety features, the Britax Companion also includes plusher fabric than most other brands, so soft you’ll wish your own seat was covered in it. The fabric is removable and hand washable. The seat features comfort foam and EPS protective foam, and the basic shape of the seat seemed a more comfortable fit for the babies we tested than other models, more contoured to the back’s natural shape. The Britax Companion also includes more shoulder room than most seats. Meant for babies up to 22 pounds, it will accommodate them up to a full 30 inches. The only things holding the Britax Companion back from being our favorite infant car seat in the whole universe are the extra weight of the seat – at 10 pounds, it’s 3 heavy pounds more than a Graco SnugRide – and the inflatable headrest. Designed to absorb the shock in a side impact, the headrest is fully adjustable for a custom fit. However, it’s a big headrest. Reminds us of blinders on a horse. Some of our test babies did not like the extra flaps near their face, and while we’ve never heard of a problem, the paranoid mom inside us worries about putting a big shield of non-breathable fabric so near a tiny newborn face. While the Britax Companion is the second most compatible infant car seat with the strollers on the market, it still only works with less than half the strollers that accommodate the SnugRide. All in all, we love the Britax Companion for its unparalleled safety, supreme comfort and overall great design! One more note: the only difference between the 2005 and 2006 Britax Companion is in the color of the frame and base. The 2005s are white/gray, and the 2006s are black.
