Full Review: When I first heard about the Ergo, my baby was getting larger and quickly outgrowing his infant carrier. I heard raves from everyone that had used one about how comfortable it was and how easy it was to use. Ever the skeptic, I found a website that offers a money back guarantee even after 90 days of use, and I made the leap of faith. I am so glad I did!

This carrier is a cinch to use, easy on my bad back, comfortable for my baby and very versatile. You can use the carrier with a newborn with the addition of an insert (sold separately) right on up into the toddler years. You can use it in a front carry, back carry or side carry. It comes with both an instruction book and a very easy to follow DVD that really helped me to get the basics down pat.

The designers of the carrier claim that by having babies in a more seated position rather than dangling by their crotch it is better for their hip and spine. Also, the padded waist belt allows parents to take most of the weight on the hips and some on the shoulders rather than all on the back and shoulders. I found this to be a huge relief and allowed me to more easily carry my son and for longer periods with no pain. Another advantage of the seated position is that instead of leg “holes” the child sits with their legs going out around a parent’s waist. In this way, my baby’s little chubby legs did not get red marks on them as they had in other carriers.

The manufacturers of the Ergo have been very careful to include many safety features such as weight tested buckles, straps and material; elastic loops the catch straps in case of latch failure, and reinforced stitching and padding in critical areas. The carrier works well in the front position and does ok in a hip position but it really shines in the rear carry. Kids can be nestled down into the carrier or allowed to have arms out more as they are more secure. I did not feel like my child was going to flip out backwards even when he bounced around.

With the help of the DVD, I was able to get my young son in a rear carrier with no help on the first try! Although the manufacturer has only approved this carrier for the 3 positions, there are many websites with “cheats” for other positions of the straps and the baby that broaden the use of the carrier further. A popular position with infants in the 3-5 month age is front carry facing out, which although not recommended by the designer, can be done with this carrier quite successfully. Once infants get past that stage, most settle into a front carry facing in as they are tall enough and have better head control to look around more easily or are content to ride on the back.

Although this carrier comes in a number of color options, there are not a lot of pretty patterns for those moms that are looking for that. However, the sporty styling and neutral colors make this carrier a hit with Dads. Also, for larger parents there is an optional belt extender that can be purchased. Ergo did a good job of thinking of the little things that help improve a carrier. There is an attached sleeping hood, that with practice, can be reached by a parent alone to cover the child. A pocket on the front can hold either the hood or a few soft items to carry. Ergo also sells an attachable backpack or fanny pack to be used with its carrier.

The biggest disadvantage to this carrier is the thick cotton material is very warm. I found it actually to be too warm to use outside in the heat of the summer for long periods. If it weren’t for the heat factor, I would call this carrier perfect (and it is so comfortable I will sometimes wear it outside for awhile anyway when I need to carry my quite heavy baby.) Whether you are looking for a carrier to replace your infant carrier as your baby grows, or purchasing one to start with a newborn, you can’t go wrong with an Ergo for comfort and versatility.
