Fisher Price 2006 Fun to Learn Potty (H9483)Title: An Entertaining and Enticing Potty

Best: Looks more like an adult potty, and the music can help children become interested in using a potty.

Worst: Music is loud, and the seat sensors are too sensitive. It is also expensive when compared to other potties.

Full Review: The bright colors and cute songs on the Fun to Learn Potty Seat are sure to grab the attention of any child learning to use the potty. It can lead your child to the potty, but unfortunately it can’t make him go. The usefulness of this potty depends a lot on your child’s temperament. Some children happily play with the potty, but think of it only as a toy, and are distracted by the music. However, this potty is great for an older toddler or preschooler that has not otherwise been interested in using any other potty.

This potty is cute, and looks much like a real potty. You child can practice turning the plastic toilet paper roll, and flushing. When they lift up the lid the potty says “up” or “open”. There are several cute and catchy songs about going on the potty, using toilet paper, and flushing. I was slightly disappointed that it does not actually make a flushing sound when flushed, but I guess some children might be scared of that sound. Moreover, the sensor on the seat is too sensitive. If your child simply shifts his weight or reaches down to get a toy it says “you went potty” or it says that your child has closed and reopened the lid. This can be confusing, and frustrating to a child. My daughter would be trying to listen to the toilet paper roll song, and all of a sudden it would be interrupted by one of the potty seat sayings. Once my child started actually using the potty I just turned the music off. There is an on/off switch on the back, but no volume switch.

The best thing about this potty is the similarity to a regular toilet. This may help children transfer their potty skills to a regular toilet, or not be afraid of the big toilets in public restrooms. Once you child is tall enough to sit on the potty, the top part comes off, and can be used as a potty seat on your regular toilet. The music part still plays, but it doesn’t fit longer more narrow toilet seats. Your child may love the look and feel of this potty, but it is large and conspicuous. Also, it is bulky and difficult to transport between rooms, and it takes up a lot of room in the car. Keep in mind that unlike other potties the bottom does not become a step stool, and needs to be stored somewhere when not in use. The potty’s oval shaped hole is big enough for an older toddler or young preschooler to use. Although if they don’t sit back on it just right they might miss. If you have a son he could easily spray pee between the seat and the collection bowl, which then rolls down the front of the potty and into the floor. My daughter has done this a couple of times when she has a particularly heavy stream. Also the extra cup for boys is made of hard plastic, and might scratch his privates if he is not very careful.

The potty collection bowl is easy to remove and clean. It has no corners for waist to get stuck in. It is also small enough to hold close to the potty to dump (no splattering), and can be rinsed out in a small sink. If you child insists on dumping it out himself, it is easy to splash pee on the back of the potty while trying to remove the bowl. This is a hard to clean place, because the hinges of the potty seat have cracks and corners for the pee to hide in. It is very much like cleaning your own toilet around the hinges. Lastly, due to the electronics the potty cannot be submerged in water. This makes it harder to clean if your child gets poop all over the potty seat, and down the front of the potty. Trust me, this will happen at least once.

At around $35 this potty chair is twice as much as simple potty chairs. However, it is comparable in price to other electronic potty chairs. Since the sensor doesn’t seem to work properly, I don’t personally think it is worth it. However, if you’ve tried everything (rewards, panties, dolls), and your older child still wants nothing to do with potty training this can be the item that entices your child on to the potty scene. In that case it is worth its weight in gold, but otherwise a simpler and cheaper potty would probably work just as well.
