Full Review: The Fisher Price Sounds ‘N Lights Baby Monitor works well, and is convenient for a monitor that is under $30. The monitor comes with a transmitter that stays with the baby and a receiver that goes with the caregiver. Some packs offer two receivers so you can keep one in the master bedroom and the other in a common area like the kitchen. This is especially convenient if you have a large or multilevel home.

One of the best things about this monitor is its portability. The receivers can be plugged in or powered by batteries. Each receiver uses three AAA batteries. This monitor does not come with a charger, but it does accept rechargeable batteries. A low battery indicator light will help you know when it is time to change the batteries. The monitor works for up to 400ft, and has a belt clip so parents can even monitor baby while doing gardening or playing with older children outside.

Another neat feature is the way the receiver lights up so you can “see” your baby’s movements and cries. There are several lights that arch across the top of the receiver. The number of lights that light up correspond to the level of noise the baby is making. One light means the baby is quiet, and all lights mean the baby is crying loudly. This is very convenient in two ways. First, if you are taking a shower or vacuuming you do not have to turn the volume up to know how your baby is doing. Second, parents can monitor their baby without having to endure the cries that sometimes accompany bedtime. There is even a night light option on the transmitter that emits a soft light that won’t interfere with baby’s sleeping.

The microphone on the transmitter is incredibly sensitive. It picks up the softest sounds such as baby’s breathing. For this reason you may hear amplified background noises or talking from adjacent rooms. Of course this is only true if and when you have a clear transmition. Unfortunately these monitors are notorious for having lots of static and interference. Some users have picked up phone conversations and radio stations instead of their baby. Also, it is not uncommon for people living in close proximity to another family with a baby monitor to pick up the activities of the neighbor’s baby. This is especially true if you live in an apartment building.

Improving the sound quality is not terribly difficult, but it may take some trial and error. The monitor operates on two different channels. If one channel is not working you can manually switch to the other one. The channels have to be switched on both the transmitter and receiver. Thus, in order to change the channel you do have to go into the baby’s room. This can be annoying at night when you don’t want to disturb the baby, but it really can diminish the static or interference. Other things that cause trouble are placing the monitor near other electronics such as a cell phone or TV, and touching or walking near the receiver while the volume is up. Lastly, simply moving the receiver to another part of the room or a different distance from the transmitter sometimes helps. Even with a clear signal there is still a constant hum that does irritate some parents who are light sleepers.

Overall, this is a pretty good monitor. It can be difficult at first to find a clear signal, but it has great features and a price that fits most any budget. Plus the portability, dual receivers and night light make it very convenient.
