In the trade-off between being able to keep track of our toddlers in a crowd and enduring the horrified stares of other moms who thought a restraint system was cruel and unusual punishment, our desire to seem like nice moms usually won. Thankfully though, we can now have it both ways. The good folks at GoldBug have produced a Harness Buddy that is indeed our new best friend. The Harness Buddy is a safety restraint for ages 18 months to 4 years that looks like a stuffed animal backpack. All parts are soft, flexible and both kid- and mom-friendly. Our favorite feature of the Harness Buddy – besides that it actually works and keeps our toddler at (ahem) leash-length – is that it doesn’t look like a harness. In fact, if you unclip the detachable tether, no-one would guess it’s not just a stand-alone backpack. Your child puts it on like a backpack, and since it’s a stuffed animal backpack, they put it on willingly. The animal choices – monkey, puppy or bear – are so cute, they actually make our adorable kids even cuter. This is one of the few products we get stopped and asked about every single time we take it out, over and over and over. Yet the clever design is functional too, as the mini backpack is really a working backpack. The body of the buddy has a zipper compartment perfect for carrying a small toy, snack or binky. The harness has 2 safety straps and buckles over the child’s chest to help evenly distribute the weight of the harness should you need to give them a tug to steer them away from the dead worms they were targeting. While the chest straps are reinforced nylon webbing, all other parts of the Harness Buddy are soft to the touch. The animal head is squishy like a pillow. Even the entire length of the tether, including the loop for our adult hands is soft and almost velvety. A nice touch since it’s usually our child who yanks us around. A 4 feet, the tether is the perfect length to give a tiny walker enough room to explore, but not wander too far away. The stuffed animal head actually peers over the child’s shoulder, so it doesn’t rub against the back of their neck and aggravate them. And the entire product is small, compact and easy to take with you anywhere. Our only wish is that it had an attached carrying bag that would allow us to fold it in on itself, for slightly more compact carrying and to keep it clean easier. But we can even without one, the Harness Buddy has become our must-have stroller accessory.
