It hits a homerun on safety, convenience and comfort that no other car seat has ever matched. The Graco SnugRide is a rear-facing infant car seat that can be strapped into a car independently or used with a SnugRide base. You can use either your car’s seat belts or LATCH (but not both at the same time). Many parents use the base because it can be attached securely in your car and then the actual car seat simply snapped into the base for easy removal. Safety experts suggest that using a base can cut down on installation error since the seat isn’t unstrapped from the car every time the car seat is removed, but not all cars are built the same. You should only use a base if you can secure it into your vehicle with a minimal amount of give. We recommend having any car seat – but especially those for newborns! – checked by a car seat installation expert. Local police stations and baby stores regularly hold car seat fairs. Of all the infant car seats we’ve tested, the Graco SnugRide installs the most easily in the widest variety of vehicles. The SnugRide features a 5-point safety harness with a 2 piece chest clip that is virtually impossible for a baby to unlatch themselves. The chest clip should always be at full chest height, however, and the straps slack-free, or true Houdini babies will be able to slide the chest strap down and free their arms. They’ll still be securely fastened by straps at their hips, but shoulder restraints are important, so check the chest clip every time. While no infant car seat is light enough or even remotely comfortable to carry, the SnugRide is the best of the bunch. Its ergonomic handle is the most comfortable to carry, and at 7.24 pounds empty, the seat is one of the lightest out there. The SnugRide is for use with infants from 5 – 22 pounds and less than 29 inches, which should give most babies plenty of room while they need to ride rear-facing. If you have a larger baby under 1, you can buy the next step up car seat a little early and install it backwards, as most on the market are convertible. The SnugRide can be purchased alone or with a coordinating stroller for a true travel system. While most moms do like to coordinate their infant seats and strollers, we highly recommend you shop for the best infant car seat and best stroller for your needs individually. Most strollers out there – even Bugaboos! – accept the Graco SnugRide, so compatibility isn’t a problem. And thanks to new, trendy infant car seat covers, you can re-dress a non-matching set. Many of our friends have made the mistake of blindly buying a travel system set and regretting the stroller they were then stuck with long after they retired the infant seat. All Graco SnugRides have the same core safety features and dimensions. Models vary by price and pattern and include extra luxuries like softer material and peek-a-boo windows in the canopy. Some higher end models have GracoPedic foam for extra comfort and all-weather boots with blankets for added warmth. We recommend picking a fabric that matches your climate; not all fabrics breathe the same.
