The SafeSeat can be strapped in a car independently or used with the stay-in-car base for easier ins-and-outs. The SafeSeat has Graco’s patented 5-point harness, 2-piece chest clip, large sun canopy, infant support pillow and LATCH installation options. The biggest difference between the SnugRide and the SafeSeat is in the weight and height restrictions. The SafeSeat is the first infant car seat carrier on the market to accommodate a child up to 30 pounds and 32 inches tall. Most infant car seats, including the SnugRide, can only be used up to 20 – 22 pounds and 26 inches. Since babies should be in a rear-facing seat until they are 1 year old, the SafeSeat can be used months longer than other seats. The extra height and weight accommodation does come at a price, however. While the SnugRide is 7.4 pounds empty, the SafeSeat is almost 50% heavier at a whopping 10.2 pounds. Our testers really felt the difference of the extra 3 pounds – which is a lot to lug around day after day, especially for a new mom still recovering from labor. The SafeSeat does have a few safety advancements over the SnugRide including standard inclusion of EPS energy-absorbing foam liner and an ergonomic handle with premium cushioning that is slightly more comfortable to carry. Our favorite features on the new SafeSeat are on the stay-in-car base. A new innovative belt lock-off makes a super secure installation even easier, and an adjustment dial actually raises the base on one end to accommodate the slope of your specific vehicle’s seat, forever banishing the rolled up towel we’ve been sticking under our car seat base for a perfect fit. As with the SnugRides, the SafeSeat comes in different models that offer the same core safety features and dimensions, but have different prices for different luxury additions like plusher fabric or peek-a-boo windows. If you live in a cold climate and will be toting your tot during the winter months, the best add-on feature is the all-weather boot with attached blanket to keep baby warm. But be warned, if you live in a warmer climate and will be ferrying your baby during the summer, many of the fabrics used on the SafeSeats are not breathable. Our own test babies were sweating up a storm even in the grocery store, and we’ve heard from lots of moms that their babies even broke out in rashes due to the heat of the seat. We called Graco and they said their seats all use the same polyester/cotton blend, but some are blended differently. We hope Graco fixes their blending problem since our babies always run hot, but keep an eye out for this issue. Overall, while we like the extra features, we don’t think they are enough to push us off our SnugRide preference, especially for the extra weight and extra cost.
