Its luscious presentation makes it a joy to watch, not just for kids but for their parents as well. The series uses great works of art to teach children concepts of color, shape, pattern, theme and even recognize everyday objects like animals and boats. But unlike the simple slide show I was expecting, the art is showcased in a dazzling animation show that breaks paintings down into child-size chunks. They take a complex painting and break it into pieces - by shape or color or concept - and then use the pieces to build the painting onscreen before your eyes in a choreographed animation sequence brilliantly timed with the classical music. For instance, pink water lilies appear on a blank screen, they dance, they twirl, they meet and the eventually settle into Monet's masterpiece 'Waterlilies.' This approach makes the presentation fun to watch - it becomes a great guessing game with your kids and a great way to verbally engage them: 'what do you think is coming next?' The DVD also features clips of children engaging in artistic endeavors. In one scene, children gather at a park to paint their own modern masterpiece. Kids love to watch other kids onscreen and these darling vignettes are sorely missing from other series. Finally, the series is hosted by a cheerful yellow animated Star that my kids can't get enough of. Star is like a toddler himself in that he doesn't speak, but giggles and winks, spins around and gets young viewers to move with him. We're big fans of Star in my house. In fact, it's how my kids identify the series, as the 'Star movies.' The creators took a no toy approach to their tapes, something I as a parent appreciate. I never really understood the point of my children watching a toy shot from various angles on screen anyway. Aren't toys of all things, meant to be touched and played with? I find it sad that you would show a child a toy they don't own and cant' touch for no other reason than it's a certain color. The music is wonderful, the same full orchestra quality as my classical CDs. The DVD is a joy to watch and one of the few titles I never get sick of no matter how many times my kids request it. If you're looking for the perfect toddler educational video, look no further than the Little Laureate series. It was voted Video of the Year by Parenting magazine for good reason!
