The Scottish founder of the company, an aeronautical engineer named Owen Maclaren, invented the very first umbrella stroller in 1965 after his daughter complained about the weight and size of her baby buggy. Maclaren used his knowledge of airplane manifolds to build a light-weight, aluminum frame that could fold compactly and still possess great load-bearing capabilities. In the last 50 years, almost every company on the planet has borrowed from Maclaren's design, but the company still produces the best umbrella strollers ever made. We were raised to think an umbrella stroller shouldn't cost more than $10. They were used for emergencies and amusement parks and parents were supposed to loathe pushing them. Why would you ever spend $100 on an umbrella stroller? The day we met a Maclaren was the day we understood. It drove like a dream. You could literally steer it with your pinky. And unlike the cheap Pooh stroller we'd been cursing, we discovered you didn't have to suffer when you used an umbrella stroller. You could have a basket and giant sun canopy and still fold it compactly and carry it with ease. The Maclaren Quest is worth every penny. Every mom we had test it refused to give it back. The fabric is the plushest around. The basket is large and easily accessible. The sun canopy is enormous and comes with a peek a boo window and pouch for parent accessories. It comes with a rain cover that completely covers the stroller. And once you figure out the fold, it's quick and easy. We find the foam covered handles of the Maclaren Quest to be the most comfortable of any others. The way the stroller was designed to place the weight of the child over the back wheels gives the stroller great stability as well as making it insanely easy to push. We were able to hop curbs with ease, navigate bumpy streets, but like any small umbrella stroller, you can't go jogging or off-roading with it. But more than any other stroller we tested, the Quest is solidly built so when you do raise the front wheels, the stroller doesn't feel like it's about to fall apart. Even though it holds up to a whopping 55 pounds (that's a third grader!), the Maclaren Quest is only 12 pounds, one of the lightest umbrella strollers on the market. And it is unsurpassed in maneuverability and steering. All strollers move well with a 10 pound baby, but when you plop a 40-pound five-year-old in them, as we did, the truth comes out. And in the case of the Maclaren Quest, we could still steer with our pinkie. There isn't a more attractive umbrella stroller available, which might explain what makes the Maclaren so popular with celebrities (that and they all live in London now, it seems...). We can't say enough nice things about the Quest.
