This sling offers parents the ability to give their little ones the bonding that their babies desire while reserving the use of their hands for other tasks. Each purchase of the Maya wrap is accompanied with an instructional DVD. In addition, the makers of the Maya Wrap offer an online tutorial, videos, and tips in order to help you become familiar with its proper use. As I quickly found out, my first sign was through all of the offered help, the wrap takes some time to become familiar with. This learning process will be continual as your child grows. Practice will certainly make perfect, however, I would suggest practicing with a doll or stuffed animal before putting your child through this trial and error exercise. Once mastered, the Maya Wrap can be effortless and quickly used without the help of a spouse or partner and give you the confidence that your child is safely secured. The Maya wrap is a versatile baby carrier that can be used to carry your child in six different carrying positions. The wrap is available in two sizes. The sizes vary in the length of the sling that will be left over after the child is placed securely in the wrap. Therefore, the Maya Wrap allows either the mother or father to use the same sling (the father would just have less material left at the tail). The wrap also allows for discrete and hands free breastfeeding and the leftover material (the tail) can be used as a great cover-up. The DVD that is provided features a woman who appears to have had no difficulties nursing while her child was lying in the wrap. While I myself was not brave enough to attempt this stunt, I would imagine that it would take serious practice for both yourself and child. Personally, I found it difficult to carry my newborn with the wrap. Because newborns do not have the muscles necessary to support themselves, they are fully supported between the fabric and your body. I found this to be slightly awkward at first. The Maya Wrap is made of 100% cotton and is both breathable and soft. The Wrap is available in several sleek solid colors as well as brightly multicolored options. The wraps are machine washable and are to be line dried. My family purchased the solid black wrap and through approximately one hundred washings, the dye has held up very well. Each wrap features a small pocket with a Velcro enclosure. The pocket is the perfect size for burp rags, keys, or a small teether. Because the pocket is located at the base of the sling and only has a Velcro enclosure, I was never comfortable leaving my keys, money, etc in the pocket but it is convenient for less important items. The wrap is easily folded and can be placed into your diaper bag for convenient storage. Even though there is a lot of fabric, since it doesn’t have any bulky padding, it folds compactly. The Maya Wrap uses two large metal rings for securing the fabric around yourself and child. When not put on correctly these rings can cause pain in your shoulder and put stress on your upper chest. Also, the wrap is placed over one shoulder and therefore places most of the child’s weight to be distributed unevenly. This can put stress upon you as your child gains weight. If you are planning on carrying your child closer to its upper limits this may not be the sling for you. To help over come this, the makers of the Maya Wrap also offer a Maya Wrap that is lightly padded over the shoulder area that will take away the stress of the metal rings (It is called the Maya Wrap lightly padded sling). Overall, I would recommend this product as a safe and secure baby carrier. This wrap is recommended for use throughout infancy to 35lbs and retails for approximately $50.00. If you have the patience that this wrap requires, you won’t be disappointed with the quality of the Maya Wrap.
