Full Review: As a nervous first-time mom who slept with her hand on her baby’s chest to make sure she was breathing, I am a big fan of the video monitor and this is the best one on the market.

The advantages of a video monitor are many: beyond breathing checks, they allow you to peek on your sleeping baby without a squeaky door giving you away; they enable you to determine that the crying you hear is due to tantrum and not injury; and with the magic of mute, can actually help you get a better night’s sleep while still monitoring your baby.

However, due to their size, weight and range, video monitors are meant primarily for viewing baby from parent’s room. With a range of up to only 350 feet (most audio-only monitors have a range up to 650 feet), the Summer Infant Video Monitor is not the monitor to take into the yard or have next to you in your basement home gym while baby is sleeping two floors up.

The Summer Infant Video Monitor includes a small TV-like monitor with a 4 inch screen and a small camera for the baby’s room that even includes night vision. Even though the monitor has a carry handle on top, it is designed to sit in one place, on a desk or nightstand. The camera can be set on a table, dresser or mounted to the wall. It has 2 channels to select from to acquire the best picture possible. Both the camera and the monitor use an a/c adapter.

The best thing about the Summer Infant Video Monitor is the picture clarity for the price. We were skeptical a $100 monitor would give us a good picture at all, let alone at night in a dark room, but the picture quality from this camera is great during the day and surprisingly good at night.

We had no problem getting and keeping the picture clear, whether the monitor was down the hall from the camera or on the next floor down. Of course, the farther away you take the monitor from the camera, the worse the picture gets.

A word on video monitors: this is not the HD plasma screen TV you are used to watching. It transmits more like a first-generation Web cam. The picture you’ll see is a basic black and white video. You are able to see your baby, see his position, tell whether a blanket has gotten over his face, and hear everything in the room. But don’t expect to be able to tell if his nose is running in the middle of the night. Bottom line, it’s a good enough picture to give you peace of mind.

The sound on this monitor is fabulous; you can hear every sniffle and rustle. If you prefer the sound of silence, there are 5 LED lights to indicate sound in a visual manner to alert you quietly if your baby is crying.

You also have the option of turning the monitor screen off while keeping the sound on. This is a good feature for parents that don’t want to sleep with the constant glow of the monitor screen but would rather turn it on if they hear fussing or when they are nervous.

Benefits aside, the Summer Infant Video Monitor is still a $100 set and will not last until you child goes to Kindergarten. Many users report monitor failure within the first 2 years. Summer Infant guarantees the product for one year, and if you’re looking to keep a watchful eye on your newborn for the first six months, this is a great option for a reasonable price. If you want more robust, longer-lasting technology, expect to pay more than double.

Overall, this is a great video monitor with a basic but clear picture that’s well worth the price.
