| | | Full Review: There are many diaper changing kits on the market today, but the Ticklebug Baby Diaper Changing Kit has several features that you won’t find on the others. For starters it is large enough to use from birth through potty training. The open dimensions are 23 inches wide and 28 inches long. My nearly three-year-old daughter can lay down with both her head and her bum being on the changing matt. She grew out of our other changing kit at around 14 months. Also, the large size allows me to stuff a wipe case, two changes of clothes, plastic baggies for accidents, and hand sanitizer all in the main compartment. There is even a large pocket on the back that I use for snacks and a sippy cup. If you had a baby you could fit 3 or 4 diapers (of any size), wipes, diaper cream, plastic bags, and a change of clothes in the back.
Don’t get me wrong, if you put in all of the above things the bag looks stuffed, but the heavy duty Velcro closure keeps it secure no matter how stuffed it is. Most other changing kits just have a small square of Velcro, but this one has a thick strip that goes the entire length of the front. You’ll never be walking to the store and have it pop open and spill out all over the place. Since the back pocket does not have a closure items could fall out easily if the bag is tipped or dropped. I would not feel comfortable putting personal items like keys, money or a cell phone in the back pocket. I use the pocket more for snacks or small books anyway, so I don’t mind it not being a closure.
On the inside there are two elastic straps to hold any size travel wipe case. I LOVE this feature because I don’t have to take the wipe case out of a pocket to change a diaper or wash a face. I have a travel wipe box that has a little flip up lid on the top, but if you have a regular wipe box that only has one large opening you’d still have to take it out. On the other side there are three pockets. One for diapers, and two smaller ones that fit other items like diaper cream or hand sanitizer. These pockets are quite small so they don’t hold much. The inside is made of water resistant 100% nylon. Spills or little leaks pool together and are quickly wiped off even in the seams.
The Ticklebug Baby Changing Kit resembles a very small diaper bag when closed. The closed dimensions are 9 inches wide and 11 inches long. This size is too big to fit inside a diaper bag, especially when stuffed, but a fabulous strap makes it easy to clip to the outside of almost anything. It latches together at the top with Velcro for use as a shoulder strap. The strap has two additional Velcro pieces so you can make two smaller looped straps. This feature is great for attaching it to a stroller, a diaper bag, and even your carry on luggage.
The kit comes in many colors and patterns to fit almost anyone’s taste. It retails for $49. This price is about twice as much as most other diaper changing kits, but there are so many features that make it worth the extra money. The fabrics, Velcro, and stitching are strong and durable. Many other changing kits are made of some sort of vinyl inside that can become discolored, and breaks down in the folds over time. The Ticklebug Baby Changing Kit will last you for years, and is versatile enough to use through the preschool years. You can machine wash and dry it, and when your child is fully potty trained you can transform it to a craft kit for busy on the go hands. For all of these reasons, I think this product is worth the extra money.
Lastly, this company also makes a large size that is 33 ½ by 26 inches to meet the needs of older children who have a disability. To my knowledge it is the only company on the market that meets this need. The larger size is slightly more expensive at $54, but that is probably due to the extra materials needed to make it. I appreciate this company thinking out side of the box, and making their product useful to all types of children and their parents.
