They come in six different sets with six cards per set including farm animals, sea creatures and new dinosaurs. All cards are printed in black and white with one side having a black background/white picture and the other side the opposite. Infants are supposed to be attracted to the high contrast and swirling shapes on these cards. For very young babies, the company suggests placing the cards against the crib walls, hanging them from a mobile or placing them anywhere else about a foot away in the infant's line of vision. I have also heard of parents framing the cards and hanging on the wall in a collage. As for their construction, I found the cards to be well made with nice rounded corners and a glossy surface. Although they are of heavy weight paper, they are still paper and not impervious to a lot of chewing! I did find they held up to my son's light 'gumming' and drooling but not repeated abuse. While the company did note that these are not intended for teething, I find that I cannot convince my son of that! I tested these on a wide range of children and had mixed results: The infant in my family did gaze at the cards and if moved, would follow them. My eight month old son is teething and in his opinion, 'if you can't chew on it, forget about it!' The older kids, ages two to four, did find them interesting to look at, enjoyed calling out the names of the animals and the large cards were easy for them to handle. But at only 6 cards per pack, they had a limited time period of interest. Also, while I find the writing on the cards to add to the art effect, the cursive style is not easy for young kids to recognize the letters. I think that these cards would be a nice gift for a young baby to have something stimulating to look at, but then I would put them away until after the crazy-teething stage.
