HOWEVER, even stainless steel cans usually have a plastic component. If you spray the plastic part with Lysol once a week and let it dry out the smell problem disappears. Full Review: At first we loved this even bought one for upstairs and down. However over time the smell penetrates the plastic and it is awful. I used scented bags and even stuck and air freshener in it. Every time you flip it the smell is released into the room. When you change the bag the smell is just horrible. We often had the bags rip when we removed them because of the design. The top does not flip out of the way and on the way out the bag can get caught on it and tear. My friends have all had the same experience. I tried to air mine outside for weeks in the sun and bleached it but it still smelled so we threw them out. Now we just wrap each dirty diaper in a old plastic shopping bag and throw them in with our garbage. It's bigger, but that translates into larger capacity for soiled diapers. The opening is wider now--a huge, huge advantage over the original. It's also a lot easier to open: you push a button and voilà, you lift the lid to change the bag. Another huge improvement over the first version! If you loved the original, you'll love the new version. I have both, and I could not be happier with the new Champ.
