Home > News > BornFree Baby Bottles BornFree Baby Bottles Win "Best New Infant Health Product" at Natural Products Expo West 2007 New baby bottle manufacturer BornFree is winning awards and new distributors. The company's bottles were just named the "Best New Infant Health Product" at the Natural Products Expo West 2007, and scored a distribution deal with national retailer Whole Foods. There has been a growing concern about the safety of plastic baby bottles, as new studies suggest harmful chemicals can seep from the bottles when heated into the contents they hold, specifically formula and juice. The chemical in question is Bisphenol-A (BPA), and it's thought to disrupt hormones and possibly cause cancer, diabetes, Down syndrome, infertility and other problems. Most major U.S. bottle manufacturers use BPA in the production of their bottles. While the risk of BPA in baby bottles is still being studied and there are no conclusive warnings aside from never heating a plastic baby bottle in the microwave, new company BornFree decided to produce baby bottles that were BPA-free. BornFree bottles are made of a safer, honey-colored plastic called Polyamide PA, a form of nylon, instead of polycarbonate-containing plastic. But the company didn't stop there. They also invented a proprietary venting system, much like Dr. Brown's, that helps reduce vacuum pressure, eliminate gas and reduces the risk of middle ear infections. BornFree bottles also use safer silicone nipples that are super soft but resist collapse. BornFree also makes BPA-free sippy and drinking cups. BornFree products are endorsed by the Children's Health Environment Coalition. And since they cost more to produce, they do cost consumers a bit more; a starter pack starts at around $45.
