Umbrella Stroller with Full-Size Features
|
Maxi Cosi is a very popular European-based company that made its US debut in 2007. Bringing their lightweight and stylish car seats across the pond, Maxi Cosi immediately started making an impact with moms across the country. Following the success of the car seats, Maxi Cosi then introduced two new strollers, the Perle and the Foray.
Think you can't find a sturdy umbrella stroller that also becomes a travel system by accepting an infant car seat? Meet the Maxi Cosi Perle. The Maxi Cosi Perle is an umbrella/lightweight stroller with full-size features. It not only works with the Maxi Cosi Mico infant car seat but has great mom and baby-friendly features such as a large storage basket, cup holders for mom and baby, large and roomy seat and great maneuverability.
Normally, we wouldn't recommend using umbrella-style strollers as a travel system because most are not sturdy enough. But the Perle is a lightweight stroller with an umbrella fold that is an exception to our rule. Weighing in at 17 lbs, this Maxi Cosi stroller could be your everyday stroller from birth through your toddler years.

The seat is large and roomy, making for a comfortable ride for even an older child. It has an excellent 5-point, padded harness that adjusts to fit snugly on a small child yet big enough with room to grow for a larger child. With other strollers having tricky harness buckles, the Perle keeps it easy with a simple buckle that is easy for mom to do but still difficult for your mischievous toddler. The seat reclines nearly flat with an easy to do strap system. We love the adjustable leg rests that keeps our little riders comfortable whether they prefer it up or down.
The Perle has a large canopy complete with a peek a boo window. We love that the two ergonomic handles are taller than most umbrella strollers giving both taller and shorter moms and dads a comfortable push without fear of kicking the rear wheels and eliminating the dreaded stroller hunch.
Even though it's a European company, they listened to our pleas for a cup holder and not only gave mom one on this stroller but provided one for your baby as well. The baby cup holder isn't the sturdiest and taller cups will constantly fall out of it, so this is one area that Maxi Cosi could improve on. The cup holder for mom is absolutely fabulous though. There is a rather large basket (it's huge for an umbrella stroller) underneath that can hold a medium size diaper bag or other baby essentials. Just like many strollers with a seat that reclines almost flat, the basket can be hard to access in this seat position.
Another great accessory that comes with the Perle is a rain guard. This rain guard is great because it easily zips to the front of the canopy and protects the child all the way to their feet.
The Perle has an umbrella fold that is easy to do with just your foot. It folds easily and locks closed with an automatic lock. There is even a carry handle on the side that makes transporting and traveling with this stroller a breeze. Unlocking the automatic lock can be tricky the first couple times but once you get the hang of it, opening this stroller is just as simple. Unlock the lock, lift up the handles, and step down on the rear step to open. Easy as that! We put the fold and unfold features to the test when we took this stroller on an airplane while testing it. While standing at the end of the walkway before boarding the plane with a line of passengers behind me and carrying two carry-on bags, I had my squirming toddler out of the seat and the stroller folded in mere seconds. And getting off the plane was just as easy, as I had the stroller unfolded in no time. Other passengers even commented on how quickly and easily I handled my child with the stroller.

So, it sounds like a great stroller so far, right? But how is the maneuverability, you ask? Great! We found this stroller to glide along the pavement and smooth surfaces, easily turning on a dime with one hand. It has four 6 inch hard, rubber tires that allow us to hop curbs with ease and navigate bumpy streets.
The Perle is made of a lightweight aluminum making it easy to transport yet its sturdy enough to hang things from the handles (within reason of course) without the stroller tipping backwards. As we mentioned before, it is also sturdy enough to accept a car seat. The Perle has the car seat adapters that work with the Maxi Cosi Mico car seat built into the stroller. There are two adapters that flip and lock up when using it with the car seat and flip down and out of the way otherwise. (Note: It only works with the Mico car seat) We found the car seat to easily clip into the adapters keeping it secure on the stroller. When taking the car seat off the stroller, you have to unclip each side with easy to push buttons. Some moms found this cumbersome since you have to use two hands to unlock the car seat but are left with no hands to pick the seat up. We found that you can hold the handle of the car seat with one hand and unlock each side lock separately with the other.
If we had one complaint about the Perle (besides the child cup holder) it would be the lack of color choices. It is available in one choice: Tan Tech. Even though it's a very attractive color option, we found that the light colored fabric gets dirty very easily.
The Perle has a weight limit of 50 lbs and retails for a very reasonable $149. This umbrella stroller with full-size features is sturdy, compact, and lightweight.
