Mutsy Spider
|
Mutsy (pronounced 'moot'-sy), a Netherlands-based company that has been producing high quality strollers since 1935, amazes us again with their gorgeously designed Spider stroller.
The Spider is Mutsy's revolutionary lightweight-plus stroller featuring a 3-wheeled design, reclining seat, canopy, basket, and previously unheard of in this category, adjustable handle.
The first thing that strikes you about the Spider, like with all Mutsy strollers, is the gorgeous design. It looks unlike any other lightweight stroller on the market. The delicious solid colored fabrics against the cool gray aluminum make this an eye-catching stroller. In fact, when we take the Spider out, we frequently get stopped by other moms asking where we got our cool stroller.

The seat is large and roomy, making for a comfortable ride for even an older child. It has an adjustable 5-point, padded harness that adjusts to fit snugly on a small child yet big enough with room to grow for a larger child. The seat reclines with a strap system that can be tricky to do with a child in the seat. If we could make a change, it would be a simpler, one-handed bar recline. Since it doesn't recline flat, we would recommend the Spider for 6 months and up. We love the adjustable leg rest that keeps our littlest riders comfortable without their legs dangling and the lower footrest that keeps our older toddlers comfortable as well.
The canopy is a decent size but a canopy extension would be necessary if you want complete sun protection for your child. We absolutely love the telescoping handlebar that accommodates moms and dads of different heights. You don't see telescoping handles very often on lightweight strollers, so we applaud Mutsy for this feature! There is a small basket underneath that may hold a purse or small shopping bag but definitely not a diaper bag. If we had one complaint, it would be that the basket is too small.
There are three rubber wheels that make for a very smooth ride for baby. Since lightweight three-wheel strollers are notorious for tipping, Mutsy widened the back wheels for extra stability. Yes, you will notice that the rear wheels are a bit wider than other strollers, but we welcome that feature if that means the stroller doesn't try to tip when we turn it. The linked back brakes are easy to do quickly with just your foot to lock both wheels with just one step.
The maneuverability of the Spider is amazing. It responds with the slightest touch. You can easily push the Spider with only your pinkie. It not only glides forward as if self-propelled, it can turn on a dime and navigates easily! We love that this is definitely a one-handed stroller to push because we usually have a cell phone, Starbucks or older child's hand in our other hand.
Once you figure out the fold - it's easy! First, apply the brakes. There is a handle on the left of the seat that you pull out to fold the seat up. Under the seat is a handle that you pull out and then up to unlock the frame. The entire stroller collapses compactly and there is a locking strap to lock the stroller closed.
A transport bag is sold separately that makes traveling with the Spider a breeze. The folded stroller fits perfectly in the bag with a slot for the folding handle to be used as a carry handle. There is also a woven shoulder strap on the outside of the bag. In the bag, the Spider is about the size of a carry-on luggage piece, which is great for travel.

Weighing in at almost 20 lbs, the Spider isn't the lightest on the market, but the compact fold, travel bag option, and maneuverability more than makes up for it.
The Spider comes in 6 gorgeous colors: black, bright blue, green, pink, ocean and red.
Retailing at $199, the Spider has some great features and with its compact fold, telescoping handle, amazing maneuverability, and gorgeous design, we think that it's a fabulous stroller for those moms and dads that love to travel or don't have a lot of room to spare in their trunk for a large stroller.
