You seek out the age-appropriate, safe and stimulating. You budget and order and hope to receive it in time. And that’s not enough? Sadly, no. You have to stay on top of every product you end up purchasing, today, tomorrow and every day. Every single item your child will ever ride in, lay on, sleep in, touch or play with needs regular maintenance and constant vigilance. Why? Because every year, over 200,000 children are treated for injuries resulting from unsafe children’s products. And with little government regulation before the sale, even the most popular products from the most trusted brands can have dangerous, even deadly downfalls. The good news is it’s super easy to stay informed. Most baby sites, including this one, post the major recalls, and mom blogs are great about sharing the news too (but you do have to regularly read them). But to really claim membership to the Recall Vigilante Club (also known as the Best Parent Ever Club!), you should seriously consider signing up for the government’s recall email notification system. It’s painless, spam-free and literally takes three seconds. Simply visit http://www.cpsc.gov/cpsclist.asp, select to be notified of only infant and child products, and let the info come to you. You’ll get 1 or 2 messages a week, mostly about lead-paint covered jewelry sold at the dollar stores, but you’ll be the first to know when the really big stuff hits. And you’ll also learn a lot about what types of products fail, what companies are the worst offenders (how many kids were injured before they finally recalled the product?!?) and magically transform into a smart, smart shopper.
