And as seasoned moms will tell you, the secret to a good sleeper is in the swaddling! Of course you can swaddle a baby in a regular baby blanket. The nurses in the hospital will be able to show you the trick to it in no time. But if you have the means, specially-designed swaddling blankets do work really, really well. They are longer and have a shape more suited to the swaddle, giving you plenty of extra material to securely and safely wrap your baby. Because of their square shape, regular baby blankets come undone with just a few baby squirms, and the sudden freedom can upset a newborn. The only downside is swaddling blankets serve a special and limited purpose for just the first few months. Some babies get sick of swaddling after the first few weeks, so if you are going to invest in a swaddling blanket, we recommend just one until you discover your baby's unique desires.
