Should I look for something in particular, or are they pretty much all the same? - Patti, Boston, MA Dear Jenn, All baby shoes are not created equal, and believe it or not, getting the wrong ones could hinder your child's mobile development! Pediatricians recommend your baby be shoe-less as long and as often as possible, as shoes constrict growth, movement and even circulation. Obviously, little walkers can't always walk barefoot outside the house, and if you live in a cold climate, non-walkers need more warmth than just socks, so here's a mini buying guide to baby shoes. Non-Walkers For babies that aren't yet walking, from newborns through cruisers, soft crib shoes are best. Crib shoes are more slipper than shoe. Made of soft, supple material, usually leather, they have tiny soles, but not much rigidity. You should be able to bend them or twist them quite easily. Babies this age should not wear more structured shoes because of the constriction. Walkers There are 2 main things to look for in a good shoe for new walkers: flexibility and a low profile. Good shoes should be flexible enough that you can easily bend them in half. Shoes with solid soles, like certain thick-soled tennis shoes or dress shoes are not recommended. Shoes for toddlers should also have a low profile and not rise above the ankle, so cute as they are, mini high tops and hiking boots are out. Look for Leather For any age baby, look for a shoe with a leather interior. Babies' feet sweat 2 - 3 times more than adults. A leather insole will wick the moisture away from baby's feet. And high quality shoes, like Stride Rite's, have treated leather insoles that prevent bacteria growth that make babies' feet so stinky. (Allergy Alert: some people are allergic to the chemicals used in the leather tanning process. If your baby gets a red rash on the top of their feet after wearing leather shoes, chances are they are allergic and you'll need to find synthetic shoes.) Size Matters When it comes to your baby's feet, don't guess. Take them to a shoe store and have their feet measured. Unlike adult or older kid shoes, the rule of thumb for babies is that you should have a full thumb's width of space from the top of their toes to the top of the shoe. Every time we've taken our kids in for a measurement, we've been embarrassed to discover we had them in shoes two sizes too small! Many baby shoe manufacturers also make wide width shoes, an essential adjustment for those with chubby baby toes. Worth the Extra Money In the world of baby shoes, a higher price will get you much better quality. And since shoes play a daily role in development, we think the extra money is well worth it. Higher quality shoes fit better, last longer and since baby will most likely outgrow rather than outwear them, you can recoup up to 50% of your initial investment by selling the shoes later on ebay!
