So, as tempting as it is, don't stock up on baby bottles and accessories in advance. You won't know what your baby likes until they actually try it, so we recommend buying one of each of the major bottles on the market and doing your own product testing. The most important part of the bottle is the nipple. If the baby doesn't like the nipple, nothing else about the bottle matters. Most bottles have a several different nipple choices, so buy one of each nipple too, until you find the perfect match. So, what bottle features should you look for? Wide Bottles vs. Regular Bottles We're big fans of wide bottles. Babies making the transition from breastfeeding usually prefer the nipples on wide-mouth bottles since the large nipple rests on their face more like mom. The bigger opening on wide bottles makes for easier filling and much easier cleaning, and the larger base makes them less likely to tip over. The only drawback: the wider size means they won't fit as easily in some diaper bag bottle pockets. Nipple Choice Rubber, or latex nipples, are brownish-yellow in color and the softest nipple on the market. Many babies prefer them for this reason. However, they will degrade over time, eventually breaking down and breaking up, resulting in a choking hazard for babies. Check your nipples frequently and avoid cheap, no-name brand versions that are made overseas with no testing. Silicone nipples are clear and harder, but the firmness means they won't collapse in baby's mouth. They are also more resistant to rips or tears and won't discolor or hold odors. Orthodonic nipples are created with a flatter shape to promote baby's oral development, but we found this isn't really necessary at this age. These nipples can have a slower flow, causing baby frustration, and by the time your baby's teeth are vulnerable to unhealthy protrusion, she shouldn't be using a bottle anyway. Bottle "Systems" There are standard bottles and then there are the bottle "systems". Bottle systems come with extra gadgets and accessories, like liners, inserts and special nipples, that can be a pain in the butt when washing, traveling and making a dozen bottles a day. But the point of most bottle systems is to eliminate bubbles, gassy babies and help combat colic. And if you have a fussy baby, they are worth triple the price!
