What's a good present for a 1 year old? - Jessica, Mt. Pleasant, NY
  • Editor Kids
    Dear Jessica,
It's easy to run out of ideas after a year of buying baby everything, but there are a couple tried-and-true presents we give our favorite babies for their first birthdays. Here's the list (in order of least expensive to most):

    Board Books
One year olds are finally able to sit still long enough for books; board books are best because they can still be chewed, can't be torn, and the pages are perfect for chubby little fingers to turn. A few of our favorite titles: Baby Angels, Is Your Mama A Llama, Hand Hand Fingers Thumb and the Touch & Feel series by DK Publishing.

    Ride On Toy
Toddlers love these tiny, self-propelled vehicles because they can walk behind them, scoot themselves along on top of them, and they now sport music, lights and even teach the alphabet.

    Wagon
If your child doesn't have a classic red wagon yet, now is the time! Perfect for walks around the block with mom and dad, they are a staple of childhood. The steel Radio Flyer is still great, but now comes with accessories like padded seats, sun umbrellas and side rails.

    Water Table
These big plastic tables for outdoor play are toddler height and perfect for splashing summer days. We don't recommend sand play for toddlers this young as they will still tend to eat it or smush it in their own eyes, but water tables with wheels, buckets and scoops provide hours of fun. (Remember to carefully monitor babies near any amount of water!)

    Play Tunnels/Play Tent
These pop-up, nylon structures are light, easy to assemble, a breeze to store and provide endless fun for peek-a-boo-obsessed toddlers. Add a bag of hollow plastic balls (like you used to get to play in at McDonalds when you were a kid) and you'll have a regular kid amusement park right in your living room.

    Playhouse
These large, plastic walled structures will house the imaginative play of your children for years, but you can introduce them to children as early as one. With doors and windows that open and close, doorbells, play kitchens and tiny chairs, they are veritable wonderlands for little ones. Primarily used outside, they can easily be used indoors in a bedroom, basement or, if you're kid-crazy like us, right in the living room!
