Baby Jogger has been providing active moms and dads with strollers for more than 27 years. The Baby Jogger Company was born in 1984 when Phil Baechler created the first jogging stroller, making his jogs with his infant son easier and more enjoyable.
The City Elite is Baby Jogger’s full-size, top-of-the-line, all-terrain single stroller. This nearly perfect, all-terrain stroller is well-built, sturdy and can be used for sport or casual use. The 2012 model is complete with a few changes from the previous models. Let’s get the changes out of the way so you don’t have to search what’s different:
- New fabric material (used to be like the City Mini, now is like the City Select),
- New blacked out frame
- The raised kicker now secures with magnets (used to have VELCRO).
- The cross bar in the back was lowered to provide easier access to the basket.
- The basket now has elastic edging so that it is easier to access from the side.
- Only one peek-a-boo window on the top of the canopy instead of the two of previous years.
- No more racing stripes. (Even though some parents didn’t – we liked the racing stripes!)
Now that you know the changes, let’s get to the rest of the stroller.
The City Elite sports a huge seat! It’s roomy enough for a big or tall kid and has a weight capacity of 75 lbs! (That’s like a 10 year old!) The seat is 14″ wide with a 21″ seat back and a tall 26″ seat back to canopy measurement. The seat is tall enough for our 2, 5 and 7 year old (yes, 7 year olds ride when I jog!) testers to fit with no problem.
The seat is complete with a padded, adjustable, 5-point harness for safety that is easy to adjust for your growing child without having to thread it through the seat. We love that the harness buckle is easy for mom to do but impossible for our toddlers! (Even the 5 year old couldn’t escape this seat!)
Reclining the seat is easy to do with the one-handed strap system and allows you to place the seat in any position from upright to nearly flat (150 degrees). When reclined, the seat is well ventilated with a large mesh window to allow air to flow through, and a drop down weather cover allows you to close the mesh back when the weather is cool or rainy.
Since the stroller can accept an infant car seat (with the adapter sold separately) and has an almost flat reclining seat, you can use this stroller from the time you take your bundle of joy home from the hospital.
The handle bar is adjustable up and down from 33″ to 44″ (ground to handlebar) for taller and shorter parents. The tallest of parents will love this handlebar. It’s easy to operate with two push buttons on the sides.
Let’s talk canopy! The canopy on the City Elite 2012 is huge! Full-coverage-HUGE! It is complete with a large peek-a-boo window that feature magnetic closures so that you won’t disturb your baby just to get a peek. There are also fabulous side ventilation panels with covers so that you child can see out and to allow air to circulate into the stroller from the sides.
Storage is the name of the game on the Cite Elite! Baby Jogger gave us a fabric parent console that has three divided compartments for drinks and parent essentials. On the back of the seat is a huge mesh pocket and under the stroller seat is a large basket that will accommodate a large diaper bag plus baby essentials.
The maneuverability on the stroller is fabulous! The front swivel wheels allow us to turn it easily and the air tires and suspension make for a smooth ride. The stroller really is easy to push even with one hand.
There three large, 12″ forever air rubber tires. These tires have permanent air chambers inside them so there is no need to pump them up and never a worry about getting a flat! Plus, these ultra rugged tires allow parents to go off-roading with the kids aboard. The front wheels swivel for easy agility as well as has the ability to lock for added safety and control while jogging or on rougher terrain. The stroller has a parking brake that is operated by a convenient hand lever on the side of the handlebar making it ultra flip-flop friendly!
Want a travel system? Baby Jogger offers optional car seat adapters to use the stroller as a travel system with Graco, Peg Perego, Britax, Chicco, Evenflo and Maxi Cosi infant car seats.
The City Elite 2012 has the same super easy fold that we’ve grown to know and love from Baby Jogger. Grab the strap in the seat – pull up – and the stroller folds down quickly. Yep, it’s a one-handed fold! Plus, we LOVE the automatic lock that instantly engages when we fold the stroller.
Weighing in at 26 lbs, the City Elite is an average weight for an all-terrain stroller. We have no problem throwing it into our trunk (which means there is no “heave-ho” with this one!).
The Baby Jogger City Elite retails for $399. If you are looking for a very sturdy, gorgeous stroller (it’s a workhorse), with a tall, roomy seat, fantastic canopy, an adjustable handlebar, tires you don’t have to worry about a flat and superb maneuverability – we definitely think it’s totally worth it.
PS. The City Elite is no longer offered in a double version for 2012.
