Welcome to week 4 of our Building a House with Pinterest series. Last week was all about the playroom and this week we are focusing on the laundry room. I have to say that the laundry room is my least favorite room to hang out in because nothing fun is going on in there. With a family of five, laundry seems to be never-ending. I hate it. I don’t mind the throwing in the washer part- it is the removing from the dryer and putting away that pains me. Oh, and scraping random things off the inside of the dryer, such as gum or playdoh, that I missed in a child’s pocket isn’t much fun either.
So, we need to think fun in this room, people! One problem is that the laundry room isn’t very big in our new house. It just isn’t as big as I’d like but I couldn’t do anything about it, so I’m going to have to work with what I have.
No matter what size my laundry room is, one of my requirements is a laundry sink. Think of the clothes that need to be rinsed before tossing in the washer. Plus, my husband likes to clean out paint brushes and rollers in a sink and that isn’t happening in my kitchen. While I’d like my laundry room to look like this one from Style At Home…
Unfortunately, we only had room for a sink like this (similar to this one from Family Handyman)…
I’m going to have to get fancy after I move in and do something about that boring sink. Either find a smaller sink built into a cabinet or somehow spice up that one.
One thought I had was to stack the washer and dryer to create more space in my laundry for a bigger sink and more counter space. I’m a little hesitant because I’m not sure how you actually get into that top washer, or is that the dryer, when it is that high? Am I supposed to keep a step stool in the laundry room?
I’m not sure that gives me any more counter space than the machines side by side because I could always create a counter top over the washer and dryer like this. Plus, if I had a TV in there, maybe I wouldn’t mind folding laundry so much?! 😉
Now, let’s get back to the fun aspect of a laundry room. I’ve seen a trend lately of putting a chandelier or some other type of fun light in the laundry room. I’m seriously considering something like this.
Another way to make the laundry fun is with a bright paint. If the laundry room isn’t the same drab taupe, grey or neutral color as the rest of the house and is a fun Caribbean blue or sunny yellow, I’m sure that would brighten anyone’s mood when they walk in the room not matter how much laundry is in there.
Since I’m dealing with a small(ish) room, I think (I haven’t really seen it yet), I need to think about organization. Shelves and baskets should definitely give everything a place. I’ll have some built in cabinets but I might need to add some more shelves like these from I Heart Organizing if there is enough space.
Plus, I plan to add some hooks like this amazing blue and white laundry room below.
I already know that no matter what I do to the laundry room, it definitely isn’t going to be one of my favorite rooms in the house. Even if it looked like the one below, it would always still be the laundry room.
