5 Foods That Increase Milk Supply

Sharing is caring!

Tomorrow is the start of Ramadan, a very special month where Muslims fast from both food and drink from sunrise to sunset, in order to focus on their spiritual journey. Most nursing mothers do not fast during this time, but for those who do feel comfortable breastfeeding and fasting, here are five food items that can increase milk supply.

1. Water– Technically a drink, but be sure to drink plenty of water to not only keep you hydrated, but also to maintain your milk supply! Coconut water is a good option if you want something with a little more flavor, while being full of nutritional benefits and rehydrating you after a long day of fasting.

2. Oatmeal– According to many women, a bowl of oatmeal in the morning can increase milk supply. So eat away! Add some delicious berries on top to make your breakfast more exciting.

3. Mother’s Milk Tea– There are so many different milk inducing teas available on the market at the moment, but Mother’s Milk Tea is still one of the most popular.  Both fennel seed and anise seed are milk boosters.

4. Fenugreek– Fenugreek contains iron, calcium, vitamins and minerals, and is well known to increase milk supply. You can eat fenugreek seeds, capsules, or even drink the tea- take your pick!

5. Lactation cookies – Did someone say cookies?! Yes please! These cookies aren’t your regular kind, they include a whole host of vital ingredients, but they’re also delicious! Here are two recipes from Dr Momma that will help induce milk supply (for Muslims, omit the use of brewer’s yeast in the recipes, as it is impermissible according to the halal diet).

The most important thing during this month is yours and your child’s health, so keep that in mind when fasting while breastfeeding.

Wishing those celebrating a wonderful Ramadan!
