Two Easy Busy Bag Crafts for Toddlers

Sharing is caring!

I shared a few weeks ago that my son and I participated in a busy bag swap with our local mommy and me group. To recap- our busy bag swap was where each mom made the same busy bag activity, enough for each participant, and then we swapped with one another.  We walked away with a wide variety of crafts and activities. It was a great experience! And definitely one I would recommend facilitating in your local group.

Today, I wanted to share two busy bag crafts that are extremely easy-to-make for your toddler. They use very basic materials that you either already have laying around or will require a quick trip to a craft store.

1. Spoon Matching

Did you know it’s kind of difficult to take pictures of something clear? 🙂

Odds are you’ve got a box or two or plastic spoons laying around. If not, be sure to pick some up next time you’re at the grocery store.  For this activity, you will need one set of white spoons and one set of clear. Then, using a variety of colored Sharpie markers, draw different shapes on each white spoon. Draw a matching shape on a clear spoon so you have a set of each.  The intention is to put the clear spoon on top of the matching white spoon as shown below:

I will say that my son doesn’t play with this busy bag activity as intended yet, but he enjoys it in his own way (typically using them as drumsticks more than anything).

2. Felt Popsicles – Busy Bag Crafts

felt popsicles

Using a few different colors of felt and coordinating craft sticks, this activity should take very little time to create.  (Craft sticks can be purchased already colored or alternatively you could color them yourself.)

This busy bag activity requires a basic stitch to be sewn. It can absolutely be sewn by hand if you don’t have access to a sewing machine. As you can see in the photo above, it is just a simple stitch between two pieces of matching felt to create an open-ended pocket.  The finished piece is about 3 inches long and two inches wide.

The object is to insert the matching craft stick inside of the felt pocket, creating something that resembles a large popsicle.  Of course, your toddler can mix and match colors as they choose to create fun combinations.

I find these two busy bag activities to be especially great because they’re both so lightweight and portable. They are always in my bag so that I can whip them out whenever my son’s getting antsy.

And that’s it! Two really simple busy bag crafts that will hopefully engage your toddler.  Enjoy! And please let me know if you decide to make them.  I’d love to see pictures of your creations!

Just your standard disclaimer: These activities could potentially contain small items that are choking hazards.  Always supervise your children when playing and do not let them put any toys or crafts in their mouths.  But you knew that!
