One of my favorite activities is cooking with Big Chick. It’s a great way to spend one-on-one time together while Baby Chick is napping. Big Chick loves to measure out the ingredients, help me stir, and taste everything as we go along.

Cooking with your kids is a great activity for a variety of reasons. Kids who have cooking skills have a healthy sense of independence. They are also more likely to experiment tasting different foods if they play a direct role in the preparation. Cooking encourages team work and it strengthens family bonds. Finally, it enhances creativity and organizational skills as you experiment with ingredients while following an organized recipe.

Here is some great gear that will get your kids excited about cooking:

1. Paula Deen 19-Piece Kids Baking Set

This set is great because each piece is sized specifically for your little helper’s hands. Big Chick has no problem stirring with the little spoon or whisk, and she can easily roll out dough with the smaller sized rolling pin. Plus, everything fits nicely into a carrying case which can be stored away for later use.

2. Mommy and Me Apron Set from Lucky Ducky Designs

I have to admit that it’s really fun to wear watching aprons while cooking with Big Chick. Lucky Ducky Designs has a great selection of prints- including some that are specifically for boys. I love the look on Big Chick’s face when we put on our matching aprons. She loves looking just like mommy. I’m trying to capitalize on her adoration of me before she turns into a teenager.

3. Learning Resources 60 Minute Jumbo Timer

The ticking sound, moving hand, and alarm gives children visual and auditory signals that time has passed. It’s a great way to teach children about the concept of time. Plus, it’s a great tool to use outside of the kitchen for setting clean-up goals or for the occasional time out.

As I’m sitting in my kitchen, writing, and looking out through my rain-splattered window, I think today is the perfect day to do some baking. It’s been a little while since Big Chick and I got a chance to bond over a good batch of brownies.

I want to share one of my favorite recipes with you. It’s easy to follow, has simple ingredients, and is always a crowd pleaser. It’s hard to go wrong with chocolate. This recipe comes courtesy of Bake or Break.
