Easy to Make Your Own Cake Pops with the Babycakes Cake Pop Maker

Sharing is caring!

So, cupcakes are out and cake pops are in?  Really?!?  Okay, maybe cupcakes aren’t totally out but cake pops are huge!  We’ve all seen them at our local Starbucks and many of us have even made them on our own.  A few months ago our own Baby Gizmo Senior Editor Morgan did an entire DIY Cake Pop Recipe post to show you how to make them!

Cake pops are yummy but they do take time.  You have to make the cake.  Cool the cake. Crumble the cake. Mix with frosting.  Roll. Dip. Decorate.  I love to eat these babies but I don’t always have the time to do the entire process.

Lucky for me, there is a device for people just like me – The BabyCakes Cake Pop Maker.  Someone must know I have a sweet tooth because the lovely people from Babycakes sent me a Cake Maker to try out.  Now, I have to say that I have never made cake pops before.  That’s right, I didn’t even make the recipe that Morgan shared with all of us.  Shame on me, I know.  I just didn’t have the time.

The Cake Pop Maker arrived, and yes, I was skeptical.  Was this machine going to make the same cake pops people love?  Well, the short answer is yes and no.  Yes, it makes cake pops but they are a bit different than the traditional cake mixed with frosting pops that resemble wet cake.  To be honest, I have a few friends that don’t like cake pops because they say they taste like raw cake.  The Cake Pop Maker would be their best friend because instead of those traditional “wet” cake pops – this machine makes ’em more like regular cake on a stick.  Yes, the cake is still moist but it doesn’t have that raw, wet taste.

I unpacked the Cake Pop Maker and loved that it was a fun shade of light purple.  It comes with the maker, a cake pop stand, recipe booklet, cake pop sticks and a two-pronged fork.

While I think you can use a standard cake mix (pick a moist one!), I decided to try one of the recipes that came with the maker.  I chose the Chocolate Cake Pops recipe.  Now, I have to say that I ALWAYS use a cake mix.  What is easier than a mix, eggs, oil and water and mixing?!?  But I wanted to go all out on this one and was surprised that making the cake pops from scratch didn’t take me much longer.  Maybe 5 minutes max.

I mixed all the ingredients together and then turned on the Cake Pop Maker to preheat just as the instructions said.  The green ready light went on in less than 5 minutes and I was ready to go.  I filled each cake pop hole with 1 tbsp of batter.  You have to do this quickly as you have 12 holes to fill and the first one you fill will start to bake and rise if you go too slow.

After filling all the resevoirs with batter, close the lid until it locks.  It takes the cake pops about 4 minutes to cook.  I do wish there was some type of timer or bell that was built in to let me know the cake pops were done but I just set the kitchen timer.  It’s important to note that the device gets very hot to the touch on the outside when baking so be careful with any children around.

When time is up, open up the lid and you have 12 cute little balls of cake.  Of course, the cake balls are hot so I removed them with the included two-pronged fork and set them on the cake pop stand to cool.  I repeated this process with the remaining batter and the recipe made 40 cake balls.

After the cake balls cooled, I popped them in the freezer for 15 minutes to make the next step easier.  While the cake balls were freezing, I melted a 1/2 a bag of chocolate candy melts and a 1/2 a bag of vanilla candy melts according to the package in the microwave.  Be careful not to burn your candy melt.  To make it even more fun, I dyed the vanilla candy pink for my pink-loving daughter!

Next, I took the cake balls out of the freezer and inserted the cake pop sticks.  As recommended by the instructions, I dipped the end of the stick in the candy melt before inserting to help keep the cake pop on the stick.

Now, it’s time to dip the cake in the candy melt.  Be careful when doing this so that you don’t knock the cake off the stick.  Once the cake was dipped, you can decorate the cake pop with whatever you like.  Nuts. Sprinkles.  Sugars.  I chose sprinkles.

You can get very creative with cake pops if you have the time.  After the cake pop was decorated, I placed the end of the stick in the holes in the cake pop stand to stand them up to cool.  I love that they added these holes in the stand because I didn’t know what I was going to do to cool them.

Unfortunately, there are only 12 holes in the stand so the other 28 cake pops were propped  up in cups and a quite a few were placed in styrofoam that I put into a basket for decoration.

Now, it wasn’t a quick process but I would imagine much faster than making them the traditional way of crumbling cake and rolling your own balls.  It was very easy though!  The cake pops looked great but how did they taste, you ask?  Delicious!  No, seriously.  They were perfect.  The cake pops were moist but didn’t taste like raw cake.  They tasted like moist cake on a stick dipped in chocolate.  Yummy!  Plus, I was a hit with my kids for making them.  “Cake on a stick, mom?  We love you!”

This Cake Pop Maker really does work!  And this is no one-trick pony machine!  You can even make donut holes with it for breakfast.  I like donuts!  So, I whipped up a batch of  Apple Cider Donut Holes (from the recipe book!) and they were also delicious!  The donut holes took less time because I didn’t have to mess with melting chocolate, dipping and decorating.  Cook the donut holes, throw them in a bag of cinnamon sugar and you’re done.  Voila!  Yummy donuts!

After my baking session was over, I was pleased that the Cake Pop Maker was really easy to clean.  I just had to let it cool for about 45 minutes and then wipe it out with a damp cloth.  That easy!

Overall, I am very pleased with the Babycakes Cake Pop Maker! It makes delicious cake pops (and donuts!) in less time that the traditional cake pop method.

That is awesome! Thanks for the review, I haven't heard of this product yet but I have made cake pops the traditional way. While I did love the taste of the regular cake pops, I must say I was very hesitant about giving my toddler (who LOVES cake pops, why of course) a ball of cake loaded with icing and chocolate on the outside. This cuts out the icing and that makes me one HAPPY Mommy!! Plus it saves some serious time, which means more time with my babies! Can't wait to get one! Thanks again :)
