We love crafts in our house. It doesn’t matter if it’s a big holiday or a little holiday, we always find a craft to do. However, there are only so many crafts one can keep! The other day my daughter caught me throwing away some winter-themed crafts we did back in January and the way she reacted you would have thought I had thrown away every single thing she had ever made. The fact is with three kids…one can only keep so much. So this Valentine’s Day, I’m determined to make crafts with the family that we’ll actually keep and perhaps…use. So let’s get started and see what is worth making out there that can be used over and over again each year…or at the very least enjoyed for a little while longer than just one week.
Homemade Heart Crayons — we love making these to either keep for ourselves or to give as Valentine’s to the kids in the neighborhood. Take your old crayons and chop or break them up into smaller pieces. Use a variety of colors then mix-and-match them into a heart shaped silicone oven tray or baking tray (if metal make sure you spray it first to keep from sticking) and bake them at 230 degrees for about 12-15 minutes. The crayons melt together to make a perfect multi-colored heart shaped crayon. So fun to color with and so useful!![caption id="attachment_20997" align="aligncenter" width="260" caption="image via familyfun.com"][/caption]
Salt Dough Ornaments — ornaments aren’t just for Christmas anymore! They are great for any holiday just depending on the shape you use. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Mix together: 4 cups of all purpose flour, 1 cup of salt, 1 1/2 cups of water. Knead together and add more water if it seems too dry and cracks. Then roll out until about 1-1 1/2 inches thick to make your ornaments. We cut them with heart shapes for Valentine’s Day and put our handprints on them. Use a straw or pin to poke a hole at the top for hanging after you bake them. Bake for about 90 minutes. Let cool then you’re free to paint them, ModPodge them or just leave them as they are. A great gift for dad or grandparents![caption id="attachment_20998" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="image via pinterest via homemadegrits.blogspot.com"][/caption]
While I wish I could take credit for all these lovely craft ideas…that’s not just possible! Check out the links to these awesome crafts from some creative Mamas and let us know if you’ve tried them.

However, I must say that with some construction paper, stamps and a stamp pad, markers, scissors and some glitter and glue, the kids will have just as much fun making and giving homemade Valentine’s! I keep all of the cards my kids give me — how about you?
