I’m just going to put it out there. I’m a great baker. Okay, a fantastic baker. Yep, I said it. But when it comes to cooking….not so much. That’s why a dinner like the Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes is right up my dinner making alley.

It’s not that I don’t know how to cook. I just don’t like it as much as baking up a batch of gooey brownies. So what happens is – I can’t think outside the box. I have like five go-to meals for my family and the rest comes out of the freezer. I know, I know…terrible, right?! Thankfully, Pinterest is there for me. It *gets* me because it fills its pages with glorious ideas for every meal and every occasion.

Okay, it’s not Pinterest but those who pin all these fabulous recipes. When it comes to actual dinners, I like to try them on my family first before I recommend them to you. Brownies are brownies but a full entree can look delicious in a photo but taste just gross. I wouldn’t do that to you! 🙂

I have to admit though that my husband and kids aren’t crazy about plain ole’ sloppy joes. It used to be one of my “go-to dinners” so they really don’t get excited if I say that is what’s for dinner. That being said, I had to keep the “sloppy joes” part of the recipe title a secret from them.

Oh yeah, they don’t really like mushrooms, but I do, so I left them in. I’m the one cooking it after all, so too bad! So I decided not to tell them about the mushrooms either. I figured if they tasted them in it and picked ’em out…whatever…but maybe they wouldn’t notice?

Even with the sloppy joes and the mushroom part I was holding out hope that the family would like this meal or at least tolerate it. From start to finish, it took me about 20 minutes to make. Not bad. I threw in a side of mac n cheese to complete the meal. Hey, I said I wasn’t that great of a cook and it was the “deluxe” mac n cheese so it’s not that bad, right?!? Okay, moving on…

I prepared the entire dinner and served it to the family with bated breath. I hate making something that no one eats. All of a sudden my hubby says “what’s in this?” before even taking a bite. Then both older kids chime in, “yeah, what’s in this? Is this a mushroom? What is this tiny green thing?”

“Seriously, are there mushrooms in this?” my husband immediately demands.

JUST EAT IT. Seriously, don’t worry about what is in it and just eat it. No one in this house is allergic to ANYTHING so you won’t die! EAT.

Hmmm…that worked. They started eating. Crazy.

What happened next was nothing short of a miracle. Every one of them cleaned their plates and asked for more! My picky 7 year old daughter just kept repeating, “I love this! I really like it.” and my 5 year old son who barely eats a vegetable without being forced to said nothing because he was too busy eating. And my “is-there-mushrooms-in-this-husband” ate it all AND a second helping!

Hahahaha!  I WIN!! They all ate mushrooms and onions and green peppers and LIKED IT!!  WooHoo!

Step by Step Directions

Brown the ground beef over med-heat in a large skillet for about 5-6 minutes. Add the chopped onion, green pepper and mushrooms and cook another 3-4 minutes, until they start to get tender.

Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes

Stir in the steak sauce and beef stock, season with salt and pepper, bring up to a boil and cook about 2 minutes.

Turn on your oven broiler.

Spoon a scoopful of the meat on the bottom half of the bun. Drizzle additional steak sauce on top. You can either place the cheese directly on the meat and place under the broiler to melt OR place one slice of cheese on bun top and toast under broiler. Put the sandwich together and serve with a tasty side. That’s it. Seriously, these things are GOOD!

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 1/4 c. steak sauce
  • 1 c. beef stock
  • 1 green pepper chopped
  • 1 pkg. sliced mushrooms
  • Provolone cheese cut into slices or pre-sliced
  • Salt & Pepper to taste
  • Buns

Hey! Just had to tell you...I made this recipe tonight! It was a hit :) but i think it was missing some garlic maybe? It was like a hint of something tht was missing. Other than that, delish!

I MADE THIS TODAY AND IT WAS SOOOO GOOOD!!!MY ONLY PROBLEM IS IT SEEMED A LITTLE TOO LIQUIDY COMPared TO THE THICKNESS OFF REGULAR SLOPPY JOES.I FOLLOWED THE RECIPEE...ANY SUGGESTIONS AT TO WHY IT WAS LIKE THAT? I STILL GIVE IT 10*s

Hi Hollie,

Been following you for years but this is my first post. I just had to tell you, I was looking at this recipe and I said "oh we should make this for supper tomorrow night" my almost 6 yr old came over to see, i tell him they are sloppy joes and takes one look at the picture and says of course he doesn't like sloppy joes and won't eat them. I explain it is just hamburger etc and that they even have mushrooms which he loves! He comes back with "no thank you, let's just have the burger and skip the joes.... Oh but we can have the mushrooms" ROTFLMAO... Seriously one of the funniest kids ever!
