School Pictures

Sharing is caring!

Okay, we’ve all seen bad school photos before, right? It’s either happened to you or maybe your child? It was a bad haircut or the child is making a funny face or the photographer caught them with their eyes closed. Sure, it happens.

My 3rd grade photo wasn’t the best with this Princess Leia hairdo that my mom concocted when she was trying to cover up that she had my naturally curly hair permed that year. Yeah, never perm naturally curly hair!

Not to worry, my 4th grade photo wasn’t much better with my lovely big teeth and haircut that looks like it was done by Edward Scissorhands. Could they not manage to cut my bangs straight across or what?!?

So bad school photos happen, and honestly, these aren’t that bad. I’m still smiling, looking at the camera and my eyes are open. Score.

Last night made me look at school photos in a whole new light. My kids are very photogenic and with my job they get photographed a lot. I have never worried about their school pictures. Until now.

Honestly, I kind of feel like I was punked by my kid’s grade school. Okay, it doesn’t help that I was out of town a few weeks ago during these “spring photos” so my husband had to get them ready. Again, normally wouldn’t be worried.

So, last night as we are checking the backpacks for any weekend homework that wasn’t complete, my son hands me his photo packet and says, “my teacher wants one of the photos with the hat”.

“Ummm…what do you mean with the hat? What hat?”

And then I saw it….

Ummmm….WHAT?!?! Now, besides the shirt that is not photo-friendly since it is WAAAYYY too busy, what the heck is he wearing on his head?

Since my son was so proud of these photos, I smiled and said that they were great. I asked why he was wearing his hat and he said “because they let me”.

WHAT?!?!

What school and photography company allows a kindergartener to make such a choice? That is a newsboy hat that is worn forwards or maybe backwards if you are feeling cool but NEVER, EVER to the side!

Why would the school let him do that? Do they think we are raising a young Fresh Prince of Bel Air?

There are no words.

At this point, I pick my jaw up off the ground and I immediately shoot a death look at my husband! He raises his hands in defense and whispers “I had no idea that he had that hat with him.”

The hat looks like a pirate hat gone wrong and yet he is smiling so big in the photo as if he is so proud of his look. That is the worst part! He LOVES his photo! I smile warmly at him and tell him he looks great, and of course, we would buy one.

How could I not buy one? This one is going in the slideshow at his wedding! This is a keeper for sure! Plus, it does show that he has a big personality!

I have to admit that the photo is hilarious! It’s so ridiculous that I literally laugh every time I see it. I would like to know who at his school has such a sense of humor that they let this go down though. See why I said I was “punked” by the school? Thankfully, this was his spring photo and not the one for the yearbook. Yeah, I never understood why they do two school photos a year now but I’m thankful that they did this year.

The moral of the story is to check your child’s backpack for any crazy hats, jewelry or anything that they can add to their photo last minute. 🙂

Just in case you are wondering what that hat is supposed to look like, here he is wearing it correctly…

WOW! You were "punked!" I do love the smile though, that's priceless... as a photographer though the hat doesn't bother me as much as the fact that with studio lighting (a whole "set") it still doesn't seem "sharp" enough for my tastes... *sigh* If he loves it, though, there's nothing left to say... Looks a great one for his senior paper/yearbook ;)

The things our kids do! lol That does make for a funny picture, and it will certainly be a great Family story you all can laugh about together for years to come :) Way to think ahead and put it in his wedding slideshow, I would do the same for my daughter lol He has such a great smile in the pic though, how can you not love it! :)
